I ran back to the landing site and it started to attack my onions, then it killed me.....

I'm pretty sure you're talking about Pikmin, not "pikemen." A game where you are a bigheaded astronaut-scientist-whatever crash landed that rebuilds his rocket with the help of a bunch of sentient multicolored plants is pretty "what the hell." The game is fantastically weird and you should not be surprised when a rock starts beating your ass.
