To get back to the "impractical, but somehow realistic" parts, i messed around with a carriable Suportweapon based on the M249 reciever and got this:

The M159 Multibarreled Automatic Rifle.
It fires generic 5.56mm NATO ammunition from specially designed "rapid fire" belts, which have little to no space between the cartriges, due to the high speed feeding unit of the gun.
Weight is 14.5kg unloaded, and recomended firing is from Bipod, which is a heavier, modified M249 bipod, although accounts of particulary stong soldiers firing it from the hip have been recorded, it is not recomended.
1.000-1.300 RPM firing rate, with optional 2.200 RPM Emergency rate.
It is meant to be a one man carriable Firesupport weapon, which is capable of firing hundreds of Rounds without overheating, which is a mayor problem to all recent LMGs in Service.
Electropneumatic barreldrive, barrels can be changed if damaged or worn down, or for Transportation.
Compensator is part of the barrel, and reduces overall recoil by 20%.
20mm picatinny rail for Scope and Sightmounts, as well as flip-up Iron Sights are mounted on the top reciever part.
General loading and unloading as well as firing operation is very similar to standart issue M249 mashine guns.

i reckon they should come in pairs and you have to dual wield though...

i reckon they should come in pairs and you have to dual wield though...

that's what I meant, there is no where to put your hand that isn't holding the pistol grip, unless it's pistol sized shotgun
