Everyone knows FILM PIRACY IS WRONG, because you wouldn't steal a physical copy of the film or a car or a baby, would you?
Probably not.

However, TV channels (for example Film4, which I get for free on Freeview+) can show films.
A big feature of Freeview+ is that I can record films. And my Freeview+ Box has USB ports. So, in theory, I could record a film then put it on my computer/iPod without paying a single penny.
Yet, if I downloaded the film for free (because my memory was full), I would be breaking the law (remember, if I record it, I pay nothing, just like piracy). If I LEGALLY downloaded it, I would have to pay.

So Escapists, what do YOU think of this? Is it unfair that piracy is a crime, yet people can legally record the film themselves for free?

NOTE: I don't support film piracy.

It feels like a distinction without a difference in many ways.

All I can really think of is that the tuner being set to a certain channel might help with ad-revenue.
