So I am staring at my screen and thinking I should do something constructive, and I am really in the mood to code something. Of course the first thing that comes to mind is to make a game. But I quickly run into a wall in that I have no idea what I should make.. I have writer's block and I cannot decide what kind of game I want to code. After a few minutes of thinking I thought "Hay! I know! Maybe those kids at the Escapist will have some ideas"

So here I am. People of the escapist, I turn to you and ask "What kind of game should I make?"

Mind you this is a small, one man deal, but if others want to contribute that would be cool too. Don't suggest anything monolithic, something simple but fun, maybe something done in a few days or weeks.

Go at it Escapist!

If anything comes of it, I'll post it for all of you to enjoy (Or loath).

(Note: Wasn't sure if this should go here, or in Gaming. So If I am wrong, sorry.)

A game where media and television has taken over the world and the only people left to save us are the Amish.

Something in the spirit of Commando, but with more variety in weapons and enemies. (Big explosions = ur doin it rite!) Put in a point multiplier that goes up with long kill chains, drops over time, and zeroes if you get hit.

Best. Idea. Ever.

Amish dude with a scythe running around destroying evil robots. Akin to the old Ninja Gaiden games. Go. Now.

Ninja Gaiden meets Psychonauts meets Cooking Mama. You're a time-travelling ninja chef who battles surreal enemies armed with such weapons as the ninja-pan and pearing shuriken and utilizing ultra secret mystical magic (the best kind of magic there is!) to create the best dishes ever for a truckful of infamous historical characters.

Try making Duke Nukem Forever. Or a Earthworm Jim remake. Actually, just make a whole lot of old game remakes. Do Heart of Darkness first, and finish with Q-Bert.

March Of the Penguins: The game.
Just kidding,

how bout a game where you play as a young knight in arthurian times and you meet merlin and all that with a huge open world type map with varying kinds of missions and various weapons/horse upgrades. like assassins creed but focused on knights and wizards, not sure if its a good idea or not

It will never happen, but a Mario third person shooter.
It would be pretty sweet vengeance for Shadow the Hedgehog though..

The importance of these things is to figure such concepts out for yourself, and not get others to do it for you. I already have a job with a group of my friends to come up with a battle system concept by the summer. I've already nailed down most of the story and we each (three of us, including myself in this number) all have a role to play in making the concept and design document.

You can, however, get inspiration from other works and try to find out what works and what doesn't and apply that to your game.
I'm working in a group much like the one you described. I am in charge of programming for a game we will eventually be releasing on the xBox community games system. My issue is largely boredom, being that we haven't reached a consensus on story or mechanics, with a dash of work ethic and the need to just make something simple and random to practice my abilities.

Otherwise, I'd completely agree with you on this.

Indeed, don't finish reading this and just go.

That's where you're wrong.
I'm not sure of its exact title, but I've played a Mario shooter. Not really a third-person game though. It's actually a side-scroller. BUT, if you want to find it, I think its title is somewhere along the lines of "Mario Rampage." It features Mario with a 12-guage.

I recently made a game with GameMaker6 at school. It was called Dodge The Shit, and it involved a flailing stick man, random lethal garbage, and four very angry PacMans.

The key to making a "break-the-mold" game is simply not caring. The story could involve a slug in a maze of salt, wherein he must collect the materials to create a hydrogen bomb to defeat the evil scientists who put him in the maze in the first place. Simple and easy.

A Mario survival horror in the style of Eternal Darkness would be fun. I mean, the mushroom kingdom already has some horror set pieces; haunted houses, run down castles, skeleton monsters that never die, etc.

Erm the SCUMM engine runs on the DS, and I highly recommend replaying the old SCUMM compatible games on it.
You sir, have made my day! do you know the name of it? will it run on DSi?

I'm gonna have to add another vote for the Robots vs Amish game...

But the twist is it's playable from both sides...

Build it up in gear like armour for the robots and pure stubborn dismissal for the amish, refusal to admit technology is good and worth it giving them the ability to shrug off lasers?

god knows, but it does need making... Probably needs more elves tho...
