Kind of goes down the drain when you slap the name of what it is before you have even seen the image. More or less going off the strong color based branding the designers already put it, the strong color schemes could be arranged in any set up and it would have the same effect. As for that chewie block, I thought at best it was a goomba, that might have had little red feet or something, I guess I thought he was abstracting more.

Good gracious people, be a bit more open minded! For what it's worth I generally hate modern art (when I visited the tate modern I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry) but I can at least see the virtue in doing this!

The guy's not trying to sell it as a high brow masterpiece, or pretend to deliberate for ages over how every pixel is placed, he's conducting an experiment.

I thought this'd just be 8-bit style interpretations, but instead he's going to the absolute limit of where recognition is possible and seeing how much can be inferred by the colour and placement of a measly 16 pixels. Sure it doesn't always work but the point is, it's interesting from a design perspective to see where and why it works and doesn't. In fact it's a very good measure to tell just how iconic a character is by how easily they're recognised.

I agree he should've put the names somewhere more discreet though, the fun is in seeing who you can recognise but you just need to go to the bottom of the page and work up.
