PlanetSide 2 Implementing Weekly Updates

Sony Online Entertainment has announced plans to release new patches and content updates every Wednesday going forward.

Arguably one of the most important things for any online game, especially in the burgeoning free-to-play market, is the delivery of consistent updates. With a nearly limitless number of gaming options out there, your player base needs to feel like you're addressing problems quickly and constantly doing things, big and small, to improve the game and keep it fresh.

That in mind, Sony Online Entertainment, has revealed that beginning on Wednesday January 15th, it will be launching weekly game updates for its popular online shooter PlanetSide 2. The company believes these more frequent, regular updates will allow it to "more rapidly respond to bugs & balance issues in the game." SOE also says that these weekly updates will be "more focused" and hopes that their smaller size will "greatly decrease the number of bugs being introduced when we update." The developer also affirmed however, that these bite-sized updates won't replace "bigger features and larger content pieces," which it claims will be "slotted into the weekly schedule as they're ready to be released."

Overall, this strikes us as a smart move on SOE's part that should help it appear more responsive and active in its support of PlanetSide 2. Of course, the whole thing hinges on the company's ability to keep pace with the promised updates. As much as regular fixes and new content can help fortify gamers' faith in a game, lapsing on promises can be a swift method for dissolving that same trust.

Considerin the glacial pace that SOE updates PS2 I doubt the updates will be more anythin remotely substantial. On the plus side, maybe this means that those stupid Engi anti vehicle turrets will finally get nerfed instead of waitin 4 months for overpowered stuff to be brought down.

Between this and the fact that I think they've made a couple of things cheaper so that a single new weapon doesn't take several weeks to get anymore, I might just try and get back into PS2 sometime soon.

The AV MANA turrets rockets got their lifetime reduced to 10 seconds, down from 15 seconds.

In practice, it means they cant bust tanks from outside the infantry render distance anymore.

Theres also a boatload of other nerfs you may have missed. It really is too many to list.

How much cheaper have they made things? I've thought about picking up this game up again, would be nice to see if I can access some of the cooler gear without the tons of grinding.

Many infantry weapons are now available for less than 500 certs. This includes a shotgun for 250 certs.
A set of MAX AI weapons can be obtained for 500 certs as well, eliminating the old investment problem they had.
For MAX AV weapons (which became actually useful somewhere down the line) getting the second Comet/Falcon/Pounder is only 250 certs.

Some weapons are still priced at 1000 certs or 700SC, but many of theese weapons are not essential, if not outright inferior to cheaper alternatives.

I lead an outfit on the Miller server and I can only hope this rapid update schedule improves player retention.

We go through 20-30 applications a month and only about half stick around, which is just enough to offset the long term members getting bored of the game too.

While the optimisation patch took up 4 months of our time and was a very much necessary, bold and respectable move by SOE, content is getting pretty dry which is dire for a F2P game.

At least the game's stable, optimised, beginner-friendly and pretty much balanced these days. I look forward to the future of meaningful game patches and more play spaces.

Wow, you mean there might be more than a 6-month balance cycle? Took them bloody long enough. Might be worth poking my head back in and seeing what the state of the game is, soon.

If they actually have made stuff cheaper then I may try get back into it at some point. I loved the game but I was too frustrated by the awful pricing to keep playing, when it takes weeks of constant grinding just to unlock a single new weapon without buying XP boosts in this huge game where you have to buy vehicles weapons, upgrades, armour, abilities etc... it took far too long.

Hopefully my internet can still handle it because it was a really good game other than the stupidly unfair pricing.
