I often hear American Cheese quoted as being 'plastic.' I've come to understand that American isn't like most cheeses, it's made differently and such, but why do people think that automatically makes it bad? Many of my friends and I prefer it over cheddar(but of course we all do have favorites beside that.)

So, I ask you thee questions today.
Why do people think American cheese is inherently bad?
Do you like American cheese, do you think it's "Plastic", or are you somewhere in the middle?
What is your favorite type of cheese?

As for the favorites thing on my part, I am equally in love with Parmesan and provolone.

I've never been a cheese person. I like it in certain situations, usually ones that involve some sort of tomato and herb product like pizza or chicken parmigiana. Otherwise I don't like cheese much.

Maybe it's just me, but it tastes like nothing at all. I think that's the issue. I'm a pepper jack man myself.

Because its not made from any cow product. Think about it, it's not made from a cow!.

Notice its not actually called "cheese".

I couldn't find a bigger picture, but it says...

"American Slices: Pasteurized processed sandwich slices"

sandwich slices.
Whatever the fuck that is....

Oh, Pepper Jack! I forgot completely about that. That is definitely up there in my favorites, too. Mmm, spicy food...

I don't like American cheese, and I hate the commercials on TV for it. There are a lot of better cheeses from this country, and these actually come from an animal.

Monterey Jack, Swiss, Provolone, Brie, Cheddar, Mozza.... I love all kinds of cheeses. That processed individual sliced stuff? That isn't cheese. Its... yucky. Yet, I'll still eat a plain ol' grilled cheese any day.

Well, technically speaking these days the way it's manufactured it no longer legally counts as cheese hence why the packages will say 'cheese food product' and the like.

Hence, I can't say I dislike 'American Cheese' because it isn't cheese and the argument becomes moot.

Having said that, cheese-food-product is good for exactly one thing:

A nice grilled sandwich using cheaper-than-shit white bread and too much butter in the pan.

Mmm, childhood memory comfort food...

...

Anyway, if I had to pick 'favorite cheese' then I'd probably go with provolone.

Not that I'm big on any cheese, American included, but...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_cheese
While traditionally it was made from a blend of cheeses, most often Colby and Cheddar, today?s American cheese is generally no longer made from a blend of all-natural cheeses but instead is manufactured from a set of ingredients typically including milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, and salt. [1] When substitutes are used it does not meet the legal definition of cheese in many jurisdictions, and must be labeled as "cheese product" or similar.

Cheap American cheese is not cheese. Nice American cheese is cheap cheese.

Swiss person here. My favourite cheese is Gruyere. Emmental is also good. That's the cheese you nooblets call "SWISS CHEES HOLZ LOL". I'm not familiar with American cheese, except the ultra-processed cheap cheddar. That's good for cooking, but not on its own. I prefer other cheeses for most things, though.
