Platonic relationships - possible?

I have several attractive female friends (with whom I'm close) who I have no intention of making an advance on. I'd probably go with it if they made a move on me (it's very hard to stay friends with someone you've turned down before, and I don't dislike them), but I don't see any compelling reason (no uncontrollable urges or particularly strong feelings) to escalate an already working platonic relationship to a romantic one.

Apologies for misusing the word. I wasn't sure how else to word it... "Non-sexual friendship with the opposite sex" is a bit of a mouthful If you hadn't noticed English isn't exactly my strong point.

You didn't misuse it, so no worries. According to Merriam-Webster:

of, relating to, or being a relationship marked by the absence of romance or sex

is one of the definitions.

And I agree with the general consensus that platonic relationships are easily made with members of the opposite sex.

It depends. I'm friends with a lot of guys who I only see as friends, but invariably a little down the line it turns out they want to do the horizontal tango with me, and that's probably why the becamse friends with me in the first place, and only remained so because I turned out to be alright. It depends entirely on the people I guess.

So I have this female friend and she came out with my circle of friends for the first time a few weeks ago. I spent most of the time talking to her because I hadn't seen her in a long time and my friends thought this meant I liked her. They kept saying awkward things to her like "manicfoot's attractive - isn't he?". *cringe*

They couldn't seem to grasp the fact that I could be friends with a person of the opposite sex and not want to hump her. After pointing this out it was met with general disbelief. She likes games, I like games. She's a bit socially awkward, so am I. I said that I genuinely didn't think of her in that way and they dismissed this as me lacking the confidence to ask her out.

So, I ask ye - in your experience is it possible to have a platonic relationship with someone of the opposite sex? For me it is but my friends seem to think otherwise.

Im in such a relationship at the moment. Though she suspects I have feelings for her, I deny it because I enjoy what we have now. We have so much in common that its creepy. really, she couldve been my sister.
I wouldnt mind taking it to a higher level, but im getting a big mix of positive and negative signals from her. Im afraid if I talked to her about it, id shoot myself in the foot and ruin what we have now. So thats why im content with what we have now.

Like I burp louder than any of my boy mates, we go out and perv on girls, we play games together, we eat food that shouldn't be associated with each other and things like that.
And yeah, he just told me he loves the beach, but I had to put him back in his cage for now C:
