Now, in this day of the credit crunch, I've noticed that there have been quite a few more free mods of games.

So are there any mods that you'd acknowledge as good?

There's 3 that I've had my eye on.
The infamous Fortress Forever
Hidden (a 1 vs 8 online multiplayer game)
And Zombie Master, One person playing an RTS versus upto 31 people playing an fps.

Not recently but I promise you that Gary's mod is going grip you by the balls and it's not going let go for at least 50 hours. (You need to download some exta content for the 50 hours)

Dystopia's rather good if you like multiplayer. It is the least newbie-friendly game in existence, with a tutorial that may as well be a rick roll, but if you're willing to stick with it you'll find it very innovative and also quite immersive.

Minerva: Metastasis and Riot Act are great mods for Half Life 2.

And, obviously, the upcoming Black Mesa: Source looks amazing. And it's coming out this year! =D

Portal Prelude comes to mind
Better than the original.

If it still was in circulation I would suggest Perfect Dark: Source. In terms of stupid fun, go for Garry's Mod. That one is %2000 win.

Had a look at it now, and my god it looks awesome!

Have you heard of Modular Combat? It's a mod where you get to pwn monsters controlled by a thing that sounds like GLaDOS (it's name is BoSS). You can level up abilities and its really quite fun. I have a jetpack so I can become so high that I could touch the sky.

ArmA players really owe it to themselves to check out the ACE Mod [http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ACE] for ArmA. It's a near total-conversion that adds tons of realistic features that enhance gameplay.

I have been playing Duke Nukem 3D with the eduke32 engine with the High Resolution Pack which makes the game actually 3D it is pretty kickass.

I have also been playing Panzer Elite Special Edition with the Panzer Elite 3 Mod and the Ost Front Pack.
