Playing a Support Role in Multiplayer Games

I've been playing a lot of DOTA 2 recently, and I've been having a lot more fun supporting my team than trying to carry them.



I don't have to worry about getting last hits (for gold) and I can concentrate on helping my carries reach their full potential while denying gold to enemy heroes.


Playing a medic in TF2 is also great for a change of pace.


What about you guys?

Any chance I could convince you to play some LoL Daystar? It would be a laugh :3

I've heard that the LoL community is more acidic than the DOTA 2 community, which, considering how bad the latter can be...

Plus I've only just learned all the basics on DOTA, I don't want to start on another one

I too kind of enjoy support in Dota 2. It's a nice gig. It's relaxing. People give you props for doing what you're supposed to do (buy courier and wards. Also buy other support items like a Mek, Pipe, or whatever) and if the game falls apart, it's likely not your fault (well, assuming you're not a CS stealing support who feeds the other team and never wards). I like getting kills, but I also like chilling as a support. It's good for drinking while playing.

I myself realised that I suck as carry. But initiator or support with disables is a role a strife in. So yeah, I love shakling two people up with my favorite gal Lyralei or letting PLs illusions fight himself with the help of your friendly neighbor Shadow Demon.

Also, from the few times I played him it seems that Clockwerk is pretty much the hero designed best for my playstyle. Get in, cagematch, get out!

Clockwerk is my fave (well...he and Brewmaster)!

It's awesome to hook, cog, turn on the battery assault, and then laugh (that skill does a ridiculous amount of damage if you manage to catch someone away from creeps). Blade Mail makes it all even better.

Hmmm, from what I've heard the community of DOTA hardly speaks English and since there is no real punishment for leaving games people just drop out, making games a tad... one sided? Oh and regardless whether it's LoL or DOTA, both have terrible rage instilled within the community (Except for calm and collected players such as myself :3).

Well when you inevitably get bored of DOTA 2 [sub](trust me you will)[/sub]. Grab LoL you "try hard scrub omfg feeder noob" and have some fun with good ol' Rookie :3

My favorite heroes in DOTA 2 are Lion, Ogre Magi and Crystal Maiden. Like others have said, there is much less pressure for you to do your best, and, like Daystar said, I like helping others become stronger. Although I find last hitting easy, I usually just harrass the enemy hero and deny our team's creeps, while my team mate get all the gold.

The problem with playing support, though, is that if you kill too much enemy heroes some players will be annoyed and complain you are kill stealing, denying them of their much needed gold. And if your team is losing, you are always the one to be blamed ("You didn't warded enough", "Why you only have Arcane boots and a magic stick!?", "Why you die so much?"). In almost all of the games I play I am the one with the most assists, I still get flamed if we lose, just 'cause.

There is punishment.

If you leave, you get put into a low priority pool for 24 hours where you can only play with others in the low priority pool.

Nope, not really. Most people speak english, and there is a punishment for leaving. Leavers are put in a low priority queue, so they often get matched up against each other, while you get matched up with people that don't leave. It's not a long term punishment, but it means you usually won't meet leavers unless you are one.

Besides, who would want to leave for LoL where you have to purchase heroes you want? Having them all from the start is great

Srsly tho some LoL games with you Daystar would be pretty freaking Hype. The hypest thing since that one Amaterasu comeback last year in fact. Don't worry you've got me playing Best Pony EUW, we got dis. Oh and Rookie is the half decent Rice/Captain Teemo but we don't talk about him. He does enough talking for us XD

I find Keeper of the Light and Nyx Assassin to be the most fun supports.

Playing KOTL in Dota 2 is very rewarding. Especially when in lane with a carry that can make use of lots of mana for some early kills.
One of the best games I have had was playing KOTL while laning with a Phantom Lancer. He was able to level and spam Spirit Lance early game to get some easy kills while I kept his mana up. KOTL also doesn't need to worry about last hits ever due to his Illuminate.

I like playing the healer, it's where the real power of life and death is, also I have a very "mother hen" personality and the white mage (cleric, doc, what-have-you) never gets questioned about that tendency.

I played Sona occasionally in LoL, but generally speaking I find support roles really boring. I don't need to be doing all the deeps, but I like being in the thick of things dishing out crushing blows, giant fire balls and the like. I generally prefer to play mages in MOBA games for their combos and crowd control, but back in my WoW days I loved the role of main tank. In fact, in the few WRPGs out there that support MMO party structures I prefer to play the tank in the party. Sword and board warrior in DAO is a blast imo.

Play Leona, you'll be diving in ball deep and cc-ing their entire team. Funnest support imo

Oh gosh, I cant even play DoTA 2 right now, its pissing me off. I always try to random and be happy with what I got, but then when 3 of our team randoms (just pub games), the whole other team will pick almost "Rafi, Drow, Tiny, Chaos Knight, etc."

I had to stop because im tired of playing balanced team vs. carry team.

I love myself some Bloodseeker though, help control the flow of team fights... Oh dat feeling when an enemy has to stop as he is running from the battle with less than 100 health left, makes me giggle...

But back on topic....

ARMA 3, I love being a spotter/sniper. Ill get dropped on a nice little perch by a chopper behind enemy lines and just call enemies out.

Plantside 2... I love my Sundy

Halo 4... mah vehicles again.

I will say though, playing ARMA 3 with a bunch of people you know is fun, espically when one is a paramedic. I asked him before,
Me: "So, do you always play medic on ARMA then?"
Him: "I sometimes do, but most of the time I go, 'fuck it, im not working'"
Then a few seconds later he is healing me up with a medkit on wasteland cus I cant heal above 75.

I don't really like targeted support like in TF2, because I often can't communicate effectively and it creates a wierd responsibility that I don't like being burdened with. However, I was primarily a medic in BFBC2 (which involved reviving other players, and placing health packs, along with suppressive fire from the LMG. ^^), and also primarily a medic in Resistance 2's co-op, which involved firing blasts of healing energy, reviving people, and you were the only really self-sufficient class. Basically, I do like support roles, and I'm alright with people relying on me to a point, but TF2 medic requires too much finesse without proper communication.

Seems like everyone plays supporting roles in TF2. It gets to a point where half the team are snipers and spies. Then they complain no one is pulling their weight when we get rolled by heavies and soldier etc.

For that reason I rarely get to play supporting roles because we need someone to push. I do enjoy supporting roles when I do get to play them.
