So I was out for a hillwalk today with some folks and we did a couple of munros (mountain in Scotland over 3000 feet high; today was Stob Coire Raineach and Stob Dubh in Glen Coe, if anyone's interested) in the driving rain. Great stuff apart from the soaking.

On with the topic. To pass some of the time on the way up I ran through Super Metroid in my head and 'collected' 100% of the pick-ups. I've been playing it a lot recently, so the route is pretty clear in my mind. I'm sure many many people around here have played that game enough at some point in their lives to understand.

..and no - it's not like I was full-on playing the game. I wasn't visualising Crocomire's animations and timing Super Missiles, or anything like that. More like 'go here; collect this; bomb the wall; get that; head back to the pink room..' etc.

Just curious - does anyone else do this at any time or does this seem like madness (or at least a little gaming-obsessive)? What games; why?

I plan out engagements in FPS games from time to time. Thinking about the layout of maps, where I should be headed when and how many enemies I could typically expect to be there. Its kind of interesting seeing just how far forward you can actually plan something you'd expect to be mostly twitch based. Its one of the reasons I can't stand Black Ops, actually. The maps feel like they have no flow, and the jacked up spawns don't help.

Right now I'm trying to figure out in my head how to tackle the few remaining challenges in FFVI before I head for Kefka's Tower. I still have Doom Gaze, the dragons, and a few espers to find.

On occasion, when I'm at school, bored, and there's a game I'm really into at the time, I'll map out what I want to do next in the game, what's already happened, what I think the story will do next, ect. ect. in my head.

Sometimes, depends what has my attention atm. I have done Chrono Trigger runs, SC II battle plans and build orders, Portal unsolved puzzles and WoW min/maxing.

But I usually rather pray, find it better for my brain.

Lots of people do this mainly people that play fighting games. IMO more need to do this because most people that ***** about a game being hard just jump into it and don't stop think about their own flaws in playing.

When I'm going somewhere by train and I haven't got a book with me I play either Half-Life 2 or Metal Gear Solid 3 in my head. Great way to pass the time.

I did this sort of thing with Portal 2. I would quit on a level that I just couldn't figure out, and then continue to think about the whole area throughout the night. I've also thought about different strategies I'll take on boss fights and such the next time I try them between gaming sessions.

To actually go through the whole game though? No, perhaps unfortunately. It sounds like a better way to get through a work day.

This actually happens to me quite often , and it helps with my gaming , usually if im stuck on something , or on a boss , anything really , if i'm at work i will play the game out in my head. Like , " okay i gotta do this , this , this , then something will happen and ill counter with this " and so on and so forth . It's pretty entertaining , and the number or strategies i can pull out of a game is quite impressive when you think about it while not playing .

The worst is when i dream about a game . Sometimes i will dream that i advanced in a game or got a rare item , then wake up and boot up the game and realise it was all a dream. Once i dreamt about tetris ( when the tetris ds came out and i was playing it all day every day ) it was more of a nightmare . Man all those blocks .
