Hi Guys,

I am one of the few scientists who wants to emphasize the positive side of digital gaming. Therefore I need your help.

Can you please answer this question:

Although someone is in the mood to play a video game with/against someone else, can you give me examples of why s/he would not be able to play (for instance no friends, no computer, etc)?

This question may seem very simple, nevertheless your input (and discussions) can be priceless and will help us provide society more academic information of why gaming has a strong positive side. Thanx in advance.

Brian.

Uh, I think you just answered your own question. Plus they might not have internet/an online account.

Examples of why they can't play together even though they want to?

They have no arms.

i dunno, the use of the word Hej at the start is either a real dodgy typo, or brian is from sweden.
either way, welcome to the escapist.

a reason why they couldn't play could be that their friend wants to play somthing else and they cannot compromise.

Some people don't want to pay for X box live. Maybe the person just doesn't have an internet connection. These days its practically pretty much required if you want to regularly play with people Even though I prefer to play local, most of time i end up playing with friends online, its really hard to find time for a dedicated game session when everyone has school, work, etc.

Or, realistically. On a PC (I think this is happening more and more on consoles as well) different version conflicts. I hate trying to hours to hook up with my cousin only to find out I can't because we have different versions or expansions installed.

Also, computer hardware. Some people see a friend playing a game that looks awesome but they can't play because they have low end systems.

About MMO games. Bandwidth. Some people (I'll never understand) have systems that put mine to shame but are dialing up. Seriously? Quit it.

Platform. Game on PS3 looks so awesome I want to play it but can't because I only have a PC.

Limited to no Internet connection (or a connection that drops suddenly and often) has screwed me out of countless games with/against others online. Is this an acceptable answer?

If the friend is at their place, you could have the following reasons:

1. Person has only 1 controller.
2. The game may not support offline multiplayer. (Tangent: Remember back in the day when that's ALL we had? What happened to that?)

If the friend is online, you could have the following reasons:

1. Their friends are not online.
2. Their friends don't have the same game.
3. Their friends don't have the same DLC, making the games incompatible.
4. Their friends don't have a LIVE account.

No internet most likely. It's not easy finding buddys to play games with IRL y'know.

For instance, my class are devoted stereotypes of soccer.
Or fuzzball if you're Americano

No chance in hell to play with those guys unless you like to buy a soccer game for $39:99.
Which I'm most definitely NOT!

Amen to that.

OT: This is a bit of werid question. What useful data could you possibly get from this?

@Magnalian: Maybe it is. However, I have a lot of data but really want some authentic quotes and discussions of "real" gamers. I need al the "evidence" to support my data. As you know, when you emphasise the positive side of gaming, you'll get a lot of criticism.

A small thing I did find was that people like to game together instead of all by themselves. Nevertheless, data shows that gamers play far more often solo-games than multi-player games. To me that's a bit strange, so i want to know what causes this discrepancy.

Though thanx all for the input, I hope more will follow.

Cheers, Brian.
