So I just recently started to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent (no, not because of ZP, but because of the sale they got going on it atm in a nearby store) and the first thing the game told me was to play, not to win, but to enjoy the story. Once I saw that I couldn't help but think "do people play some games just to win?" Personally, I don't, I play games for their stories (which is why I seldom can put the game down once it's on)

So let's hear it... do you or do you not? and if you do, what games do you play to win?

EDIT: Goddamnit, I broke the poll... *facepalm* please ignore it...

Whoa, one poll option, OT: I usually play to win, then grab sidequest and achievements. Black Ops won't be getting that treatment I'm jumping straight into multiplayer.

I play games to have fun, and not just videogames. There's nothing more annoying than playing Warhammer 40K against a guy who wants to win at all costs, even if it means making an army that goes against his own background.

Depends on the game, who I'm with, whether it's a public/private match and if I feel like messing about.

You don't really win in a lot of single player games though, if you've finished a book you wouldn't say you won against it. Seems silly, multiplayer games however I can see why people would play to win, but if they play every match to win they're going to be the kind of people who are terrible to play with and ***** at everything.
Public servers are not for winning in, they're for having fun and enjoying the game, if you can't stand teammates messing about you should only play scrims.

No, I just play games to kick back and unwind. Some RPG games I'll start up with no intention of pursuing the main quest at all, I'm there just to immerse myself in the gameworld.

The exception is when I'm in an FPS multiplayer lobby with some friends. Then I play to win; although I don't need to get the highest score overall, just a score higher than my mates.

Depends on the game and if I'm in the mood.

Normally I play for fun, but there are times when I play my best to win. (especially with friends)

I rarely complete the games I start, I have a proud 130 unfinished games ^_^

Even on competitive games I mostly just play to have fun. I will try to win of course, but I don't care what the outcome is as long as it was fun.

I play games for a challenge and for entertainment. Often don't finish story-driven games.
