Ho-yay! Dodgy titles aside, hey ladies and gents. After lurking for a while I figured it was about time I made my first post on the forum. I guess I'll be sticking around here semi-regular for a while! :D

Anyway; OT, my girlfriend and I both go to the same University and are avid gamers. However, over Summer we're not going to be in the same place, and (most tragically) won't be able to game together for a while. We're more console gamers at heart but we won't both have access to one. While our computers might not be incredibly up to date with the latest tech, I suggested the idea of perhaps playing pc games over the internet.

That's the scenario. I don't really know about pc gaming a whole deal. I did a bit of a search the past couple days and couldn't find anything suitable, but thought perhaps someone over here might be able to help me out, or heck, even be in a similar situation to me. Ideally we would only play casually - so we're looking for something we can put a few hours in per day and not get bored of. Something that is easy to get into and just a little bit of fun and interactivity while talking over Skype.

I don't think first-person shooters are really the thing we're looking for, but I am aware that limits things a bit. I mean, things like Borderlands could be an option - almost exactly what we'd be looking for, but we already play that on the 360. Something that came to mind was the MMO scene. I used to play WoW regularly and figured that was a pretty good medium for the two of us to play. From there, Guild Wars came to mind (no subscription fees, so pretty good for just over the Summer) so I did a little reading and heard the combat was a bit naff and that the game didn't offer too much if you wanted to be an insular player (the two of us would only play just the two of us). If I am wrong in saying that, then perhaps that would be a good choice after all. Any thoughts?

I heard 'dungeon crawler' games such as Baldur's Gate, NWN and Diablo can be played online. I've not really played many dungeon crawlers so I am a bit ignorant on how they work online or if they'll even be a good option. Things like Sacred too. I am just not sure if they are any good or not. Can anybody help a poor guy out?

Genre doesn't matter a great deal - we're both a little desperate to play together so we're quite open to suggestions. (Shush. Stop that.)

Anyway, thanks for any and all help, and hope to see a bunch of you more often soon. Cheers.

Well all I can really suggest is Left 4 Dead 2.

Fun game, easy to get in to, is co-op, and runs on the Source engine so its system requirements aren't too high.

Its an FPS though, but its what I would recommend.

Baldur's Gate and NWN aren't dungeon crawlers, they're RPGs.
Very good ones at that, if you're up for getting involved in a story.

Diablo 2 is a great DC and the online is very easy to get going. As far as MMOs go most of the good ones are subscription based, however there are a number that have moved to micro transaction models. Dungeons and Dragons Online is fun though there isn't much out there as free content for the time being.

As for subscriptions you could do WoW, which if you were to just get the base game without expansions to play together can run you as low as about 10 dollars now at some retailers, so the subscription could keep you around a normal game cost if you are only planning on 3 months. FFXI is also fairly cheap now and is perfect for people playing together. Don't dare soloing past level 15 in that game, they want people to group up. Game play is definitely a grind and not as colorful as WoW so be warned.

If you want help brainstorming some other ideas my steam ID and gamertag are listed in my profile.

If you liked WoW, you're probably going to like Runes of Magic. It's a well done free-to-play MMO that copies shamelessly off WoW but does so very well. It's pretty deep, they have a dual-class system and updates abound. Also, you can't beat the price.

Here's some guy's pretty good (though old, they've added more races/classes than what he mentions since then) review of it if you're curious <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rb8PooWzNE&feature=related>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rb8PooWzNE&feature=related.

It's what my girlfriend and I play.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I'm aware it is a bit of a needle-in-a-haystack situation but I just thought I'd give asking here a try. I'm fresh out of ideas too! :D I think Left4Dead(2) would be great, just the two of us have it on the 360 too, so we'd unfortunately not get too much mileage out of it.

As for our pc specs, I'm sure we can run most modern games without too much hassle. Prettiness isn't really our concern here.

@ D4zZ,

Sorry. I just thought the umbrella term would've sufficed. Thanks for the suggestion; we're both RPG lovers at heart, and story is lovely. How does the game work over the 'net? And it isn't going to be a problem being just the two of us at all, is it? I'll keep the game in mind.

And darn you guys for replying too fast for me to reply to all your posts. :D I'll see about Runes of Magic - I hadn't heard of it before now, so cheers. And I'll keep Diablo in mind too.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I wasn't expecting them this quickly!

Serious Sam allows for multiple players to go through the single player, it's a shooter but it's also fairly cheap(15 euros for the first game's HD remake).

[urlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cooperative_video_games]Here's a wikipedia list with co-op games.[/url] It a very basic list though, with only some additional notes on what the co-op is.

Many Turn-Based Strategy games work well over internet, and sometimes even e-mail if you are looking for something longer term. I recommend games like Heroes of Might and Magic (HoMM3 is probably the best) or Civilization IV if you want to explore this route.
