Why didn't Sony launch with something like this? By now its just as easy to get all your shows online from Hulu or Netflix streaming. Still the more people this weans off of broadcast the better. Watching shows/movies on some program director's schedule and full of scammy ads is offensively archaic.

Honestly, I think it's a neat idea, but that lack of capitalization is causing EXTREME FRUSTRATION.

I mostly just use my ps3 to play games, so I wouldn't use it. Also, I can't afford cable and don't have a high definition TV or an antenna, so it wouldn't really matter anyway :p. Besides, I'm one of those people living in the digital stone-age. I still own a VCR.

Honestly, it's just one more thing that makes me want to pick it up. The whole "It only does everything" is kinda cool. I eventually bought a PS1, I eventually bought a PS2, I will eventually buy a PS3. It's neat that it will do more than just play games.

If something like this popped up for the 360, I would be all over it (actually, if I ever get a PS3 and it comes to Europe, I will be all over it, too)

I for one would also like to know the difference between this and Play TV as it seems in the article that they are describing this like a new peripheral that they haven't seen before.

I think the only difference is that Torne can record HD tv where as Play TV (in the UK at least) can't, but apart from that it sounds like the exact same product...

Having Play TV myself i can say it's probably the best console peripheral i have ever brought and at £50 one of the best value for money as its totally redefined the way i watch TV and anyone in Europe that thinks this sounds cool would definitely not regret throwing there cash at it.Although you may want to upgrade your HD as recordings are massive, i found 500GB fits quite nicely.

wait...did they just change the name of Play TV? I don't have it but all my friends in the UK do and they love it...is this the same product just renamed for Japan, and eventually the US?

Streaming to my PSP will save me a whole lot of faff on my PC to watch stuff on the train. Good times.

There's a good reason this isn't available outside Japan, and it's the same reason nobody else has released a DVR that you can just buy once and use forever the way you can with VCRs and DVD recorders: the TV industry is blocking manufacturers from doing so, for all the reasons Therumancer listed. Whether they're doing it through bribery or threats, I don't know, but if it were legal, easy, and potentially profitable, they would have released one years ago. I assume the TiVo guys send some of their subscription money to the networks as part of some agreement, and that's why they make you subscribe in the first place. (What I don't know is how TiVos know if you decide to cancel your subscription, because I don't own one and the website doesn't explain, but I'm sure they have their ways.)

TorNe? As in torn from the broadcasting? Cool.

Another check for getting a PS3, GoW3 is pushing me to a store.

My DVD player can record TV, my media player can record tv, hell my fuckin phone can record tv now. Why would i want my console to do it aswell?
Because it's more convenient, and if you have something better to do with your time then you'll buy one and show off how you've got Jack Bauer blowing shit up on your PSP to your friends.
But 24 sucks, why cant i watch Dexter?

I really hope the new PS3 DVR comes to the US. I have a Comcast DVR right now, and it is always running out of space. I used to have two DVRs with Dish, and that worked much better. Having a PS3 DVR would be huge though, because you can stream video to a PSP anywhere in the world. That feature alone would be enough for me to get the DVR, and finally break down to get a PSP.

Bring it to America!
