A 1TB hdd and a 500GB PS4 comes out slightly more expensive than buying a 1TB PS4 up front.

But that's moot if you already have the 500GB PS4, a 1TB or 2TB drive is a lot less than a whole PS4. It's also something you can do right now, instead of waiting for Sony to drip feed the upgrades.
