Playstation Imports Pointlessness

This Wednesday, the UK PSN Plus subscribers were treated to a free copy of Japanese PSone classic Arc The Lad.

My problem? It's in Japanese. With no options for English text.

Anyone else feel it's a bit pointless to realease a game in a primarily English speaking country with no changes whatsoever?

Don't get me wrong, i'm pleased that i now own a copy of a game i've heard good things about, but when i can't play it because i can't read what the hell is going on? I get a bit miffed.

Opinions?

Seriously... no english?

Epic fail there Sony!

Us Europeans always get shafted, we get to play some obscure non english RPG, while the US gets Chrono Trigger, and God Hand.

Where's the justice in that?

That seems kinda like a bad move on Sony's part, but I know that if you can get over the initial language barrier you can still have fun.

At least I was able to with a import hack'n'slash. Though an RPG is probably a different story...

Yeah, that's a major fail; they should have imported the American version which, you know, was in English to begin with.

Not to sound like a total dick, but what did you expect from a ps1 classic labeled as a "Japanese import" ps1 classics are not remakes, just simple digitally distributed and unchanged versions of the original game version. Naturally to most EU PS Plus members the Japanese side of it will be next to useless however the American imports will be most welcome.

Sony published the JP ver, some other guys published the American one so it was probably was out of their hands.

It's Free, so not really.

Obviously it would be better if it was in English, but hey frees free.

It's free. I don't see the problem.
It's not free. I don't know what it costs in Europe, but in the US, Playstation Plus is $50 a year which you have to keep paying every year to keep the game playable. That's fucking expensive, not free, and Sony should not be shafting its subscribers by giving them unplayable games. The only message that sends to people is "Don't get PS+, it's not worth it because you can't play the games you get!" It's a poor way to treat your existing customers and a poor way to try and bring in new ones.

Well, they apparently released the wrong version [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-06-eu-psn-arc-the-lad-is-in-japanese], and am working on fixing it. So it's really only a bug, not a conscious choice.

And thus the overreactions can end. It was clearly a mistake as I seriously doubt Sony would do that on purpose.

Good to know. Did i come over as overreacting? Didn't mean to. :)

For a minute there i thought i was going to have to buy an iPhone, download the text translator app, and strap the phone to my eyeballs so i could play it.

Seriously, when am i going to get my Augmented Reality cyborg eyes? Come on, Science! Catch up with me!

I picked up Cho Anki, but something tells me even if I could read what was going on, I still wouldn't understand.
I know exactly how you feel.. And that's why I can't stop laughing at this.

But to say these entries are pointless isn't fair. Myself, I've purchased all 4 Mega Man games, hoping for the 5th and 6th to be released too. Of course, Mega Man is a franchise that needs no dialogue, and even in the menu's that you can't read (unless you dabble in japanese), you just keep pressing start until the game starts. Crisis averted.

If you can't read japanese, or haven't done research about such games, what are you doing in the Japan Imports section? Even still, it's free! God forbid you get a little japanese culture in you.
