Sony just announced at CES that Playstation Now (essentially Gaikai) with access to PSX, PS2, and PS3 games will begin a beta at the end of January with a full roll out in the Summer.

Games will be available a la carte or via a subscription model.

Available for play at CES in their booth.

Hm, let's see how this plays out I guess. If the system with Gaikai works well then it'll be a huge plus for Sony that's for sure, as that'd mean all of Sony's home console's could be playable on a PS4, effectively making it have one of the largest, if not the largest library for a console.
If it fails, prepare for the biggest backlash every Sony.

Now you can pay for the games you own all over again!
Well, why would you pay for games (assuming you still have the intended console) you already own? Unless you happen to be a super duper fan of that particular title.

Anyway, I'll be interested in the quantity of games you can actually access. If it's just the games you can already buy online for the PS3, then it'll be kinda self-defeating. I wanna be able to get those old games I never got the chance to play, like Silent Bomber.

It looks like the service will be built into Bravia TVs and my guess would be that it's a Netflix like subscription model. I'm not sure what the right price would be, though, considering those games are all probably under $5 now.

If the service was solid as far as latency (I'm skeptical) would you pay $10 a month to have access to all PSX, PS2, and PS3 games? I don't think I would, but I could see it being a very compelling argument if you're a parent.

It sounds like a really good (I like the idea of a Netflix-style, perhaps) but I worry about how it will be implemented.

Licensing issues could be a massive problem (to go with a current example that irks me, Hogs Of War, a game made in Britain, with British humour and British voice acting is not available in the EU, even though it is in the US). I also worry about Sony/Gaikai's ability to deal with latency and just the connection in general. There are other worries such as when it'll launch outside the US amongst other things.

So the main thing is, potentially great idea, but could just as well end up being a massive failure.

Well, I have been excited about this, despite not yet owning a PS4... This is still going to be a BIG gamble, depending on how big they're going to allow the full library to be...

If it is going to be subscription-based, I say have it be $5 when you enter and then have it fluctuate depending on how many times you use it per month with the minimum amount still being around $5 a month... unless you're have PS+, then it's basically free until your PS+ subscription goes out... (Though, I hope that you can essentially try to keep certain games forever on your PS4, if only you end up paying, like, 5 more dollars or something to do it...)

So, yeah... I hope Sony pulls this off and then slowly improve on it so that way any future problems that might happen with it... not happen, basically...

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on it. It has great potential and it could be brilliant, but I'm gonna remain skeptical until I can see it in action.

I'm not relinquishing my PS3 just yet.
