They took a double take when they saw how much XBL was raking in, and decided they wanted a piece of the pie.
Also, it does take a lot of $$$$ to keep all those servers up and running, so I understand it.

You buy free stuff! If you get everything they offer... it's good value, but if not... I'm not going to get it.
It's really more like the Pub Club thing here. Instead of taking away everything they're mearly giving more benefits to people who subscribe, such as more demos, special content, and cheaper PS1 classic games. Not subscribing wont make your current service worse, but subscribing will improve your current service.

They promised that the gaming service will still be free. As far as I know, it still is, even though Playstation Plus is live. It'll probably be stuff like earlier access to new content, cross-game party chat, and other such new stuff. (It's like what Xbox Live Gold members already enjoy.)
It depends if you buy a ton of games and dlc off their service already, it probably is a good deal, if you buy stuff rarely when it is not such a good deal.
The free stuff you get while subbed tho is only good while you are paying the subscription rate lest for the free games and stuff, you are also entitled to discounted dlc and things you pay for thru the service.
So again it all boils down does a free game a month and discounted dlc sound good to you? Access to beta and demo before others get them? Or do you rarely buy enough stuff normally to make it worth the 50 a year, and the fact that if your sub lapses all your free games are gone until you pay up again.
either way the free service works the same, i suspect demos and betas might be delayed a bit to reward those that pay and give them a bit of a perk but it is an optional service.

I see where they're coming from, but until they put some better subscription-exclusive content on the table and not old content I bought a year ago, I'm not going to subscribe.
$50 bucks a year for discounts on the coolest games that others can't get..............okay.......
