PlayStation's Zelda and Old-School Tactical JRPG Hitting PSN

RPG fans that never owned a PlayStation will want to check out the PlayStation Store this week.

Though there are many beloved RPGs from the PlayStation era, they've been very slow to come to North America on the PlayStation Network. By my count, we've gotten less than ten, but at least they've been the likes of Suikoden, Grandia, and the entire PS1 Final Fantasy series. Thankfully, RPG fans will get another treat this week, with Vic Ireland of Gaijinworks unofficially announcing that Alundra and Arc the Lad will be available Tuesday on the North American PSN for $5.99.

These are two very different titles that each have their own unique strengths. Alundra is basically the PlayStation's version of Legend of Zelda, though it might not have as much charm as the Nintendo series. It has a big open world for players to explore and dungeons filled with puzzles, but a much more depressing storyline than you'd ever find in Zelda. The main villain in Alundra attacks and kills people in their nightmares, with Alundra the only hero that can go into their dreams to save them. It's really a lot of fun, lengthy, and definitely worth it for the meager PSN cost.

Arc the Lad is a tactical RPG originally released in North America through a compilation of three games called Arc the Lad Collection. It uses a top-down view instead of the isometric visuals often seen in similar games. The story follows Arc as he searches for his missing father and protects humanity from evil. It's not as long as Alundra, so I'd pick that instead if you only have $6 to your name, but Arc the Lad is a decent tactical game too. The PlayStation versions of Arc the Lad are considered superior to those on the PlayStation 2, if you've ever played those.

Alundra appears to have a rights issue keeping it from also being released on the European PSN. Future releases from Gaijinworks in North America and Europe all depend on sales, with Ireland saying: "It's a complete pain in the butt to get older titles licensed and ready for PSN." For it to be worth his while, he says the games will have to sell at least in the 20,000-30,000 range. While there are "lots of possibilities" for the future, including "PS1 content that was never localized," the amount of money coming in will be the deciding factor.

Pretty good Sony. All you need now is to put Legend of Dragoon up there and watch the internet moneys roll in.

I have yet to download an import PS1 game
do they have some form of translation or something?
because if I'm going to by an RPG I would kind of like to know whats happening in the story.

There were released in North America. They're in English.

Why is there an issue bringing it to the EU? Surely it must be very cheap to put the game on PSN, since the original game presumably had translated versions already released. The hard work should be done already.

I need my Alundra fix!

Alundra and Arc the Lad, I remember them both.

Loved Alundra back in the day, though I was only able to play the Italian version and didn't know what the hell was going on. Good times.

Also: Jesus Christ, sort out your European PSN releases. I finally know what Australian gamers must feel like. Pretty much every game is delayed. So many games Ih ear about, check the store only to not find them online. Then I check the net and see they haven't even got a release date for the European store yet. Jesus.

Kudos for Sony, I never played the first Alundra, but a friend of mine lended me a copy of Alundra 2 and it was a pretty fun game. The first Alundra had a depressing story?, wow, I clealy remember the second game being much more colorful and sometimes even childish, sure it had it's dark moments, and you even played as a completely different protagonist, named Flint.

I remember that it was like a great marriage of RPG elements into the Zelda formula and it had anime style cutscenes rendered in 3D, wich I found pretty funny and it had lots and lots of them. I never finished it as I only played it for a week or two and then returned it to my friend, but if Sony gets Alundra 2 released, I may buy it only for the nostalgia factor.

Different publishers. Ironically Sony now own the company that published it in the EU, but the version they published belongs to Gaijinworks who are the ones putting it on the PSN in North America.

Good job Sony, you get another $10,000,000 from games people already have played.
If they make that much, it's because there's a lot of people who want to play it again. Also, there's a pretty good chance of a lot of people who missed these back in the day trying them now. I see no problem with this.

It has to do with a different company publishing Alundra in Europe.

Too bad I played NONE of them. I was jealous of friends who actually got to play proper Playstation games rather than the 3+ rated lisenced garbage I was treated to.

As much as I'd like to play these games, I don't have a PS3, I can't get emulators to work and the original disks are usually around >£55. So this news does not affect me in any way and to bbe honest I don't know why I'm posting.

This is all great and stuff but I'd much rather see Monster Rancher on the PSN.

That's ll well and good but when are they going to release Final Fantasy tactics over here in Europe. Along with Blood Omen and I think the Res evil games. Bit of a pain with our PSN market. We have to cross our fingers most of the time and hope some one releases it over here.
