Please Help Identify a Film

I watched a movie a few years ago which I can hardly remember any more. I'm hoping that someone will be able to recognise it from my questionable description of it:

There's a guy and he falls in love with another woman at his own wedding (I think). So he chases after her, but she refuses him because he is getting married. Luckily, his best friend sleeps with his wife, giving him an excuse to divorce her, and he gets together with this other woman after pursuing her for ages. Things seem to be going great, but then he cheats on her in a moment of weakness, and she leaves him. Something like that.

Also, at some point he gets into an argument with his best friend, who falls into a river, and it's never really established whether or not he died.

The part that sticks in my mind the most is at the end of the movie when the main character has grown old. You see him trying to peel a banana, but he's too senile and he really struggles with it.

I will be extremely grateful if anyone can give me the title of this movie.

Yeah actually, it was a really long film and the majority of it didn't really pique my interest. But the ending was depressing/ cathartic enough that it stuck in my mind. I just wish I could remember the title.

You're welcome. For the record I didn't much like the movie either. Script was adapting a novel and it showed egregiously, it felt padded just by throwing every little thing there was in the book.
