For as far back as I care to remember, my mom was always trying to help me. She'd give me advice and all that, but nowadays it seems like she's gotten a little overbearing. She hardly lets me do my own homework now; it's kind of ridiculous. Over the past few days I've been working on a paper, and all the way she's been hanging over my shoulder; I can barely do anything myself! I know she means well, but hell, school's supposed to be about my own work and merit, not the kind of help I can get.

So, Escapists, have your parents ever hung over your shoulder, for better or worse? Or have they ever had good intentions and ended up screwing up more than helping?

Yeah my Dad tried to help with Maths but he was terrible at it.

He used to get real angry and frustrated.

I kind of wish they're do a little more now... Procrastination is going to be the death of me. I'm just lucky the Fate's have decided to place me on their good side, somehow allowing me to procrastinate behind due dates and still turn things in for full credit, or wait till the last second and finish things effectively...

Back in elementary school my dad would always quiz me for my spelling tests. Those usually ended with me yelling at him that I didn't get it and crying in my room.... ah the memories... Most of the time I passed them anyway.

They never helped me with homework. Mainly due to the fact they didn't learn to speak english until recently, I had to do all my shit alone, it sucked <_<.

My parents don't really pay attention to my work at all. Honestly I probably only do 15 minutes of work per week outside of school, unless I have an essay or something.

Needless to say, my GPA is about .5 lower than average, but that's not too bad considering the average at my school is about 3.75.

It's ironic that school is suppose to prepare you to handle life on your own although I think it does nothing to help besides doing things you're suppose to do on time. If life was based on what you know, all the geniuses would rule the world instead of mega-celebrities and dictators that inherited their power. Life is more about what you do with what you got but I do believe the more you know, the more you can use.

remember those spelling tests you got every week untill 7th grade well untill 5th grade my dad would quiz me on those words untill i knew all of them and there meaning but here is the kicker he thought eventually we would have a test on all the words at once (never happened) so he had me doing over 200 words half way through the year

IMHO, the sooner you learn to do your own work, the better for you. There's nothing wrong with having somebody check it, but you should be able to work on it by yourself.
While the topic is about hw, let this disgruntled college senior give you some golden advice: NEVER work in groups.

She's trying to be helpful, same thing with my dad and PCs, he'd hang over me while I figured out what was wrong. While he's done a lot of tech work, his PC know-how is quite skewed and it's quite not-helpful when your brain hits a wall when he ties a process to a part that doesn't make sense.

I want to do my own work, I try to do my own work, but she demands to see and check and revise it. There is literally nothing I can do about it.

And nice advice, I shouldn't have any trouble following it since I hate having to rely on others anyways since every time I've been forced into a group project someone didn't kick up when they needed to.

This will sound a bit harsh, but just tell her to let you do it on your own. You don't have to yell, just politely ask her to leave you to your work. When it comes to parents, polite discourse is always preferable to rebellion :)

That would suck. Might have been good back in the old days. I hate it when my mom tries to help me with my IT shit. Well not so much as help but pretend I'm falling behind as she hasn't a CLUE about web development.

Same here. My parents didn't learn to speak decent English until I was on my way to high school. They tried helping me in math, but they had different symbols and ways of doing it.

Wasn't all that bad for me, I always preferred to work alone anyways.

I always do the little homework I get in school. The only stuff I ever do at home is pretty much English papers.

My parents rarely ever helped me with my work, because I didn't ask. I had to make sure I got good grades though, because it was expected of me. I've always wondered what my grades would be like if I actually applied myself instead of getting on the internet and playing video games all the time...

Wait, you guys use edline too?

I freaking hate it. Not only do my teachers NEVER update the thing, they constantly have typos on the dates so none of it makes sense. *sigh*

But yeah, because of Edline, my mum's constantly going "DID YOU STUDY, HONEY??".
