I haven't played games on my PSP in the last 3 years and I am now looking for games to play on it.

What I'm looking for in a game is:

- An RPG, or a game that has RPG elements (not JRPG).
- An interesting story.
- No button mashing.

Can anyone suggest such a game?

Jeanne D'arc was pretty cool, nice turn based tactical combat. In a similar vain with oodles of comedy value would be Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness.

The Tactics Ogre remake is good. Another tactical RPG. A bit JRPGish in some ways, but the story is okay.

Persona 3-- oh wait, not JRPG.

I guess you're kinda SOL in that regard, as the PSP is a japanese console.

Persona 3 Portable. It has RPG elements, interesting (and great) story, fantastic characters, and- oh, not JRPG? Um... yeah no clue. Sorry buddy.

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep is a good arpg made by square enix. Also Crisis Core is good though it has a jrpg feel... sort of. Also there are the PS1 classics.

You're out of luck, I think. The PSP is basically a JRPG machine; almost all the best games for it are JRPGs.

I don't want to ignore your criteria or anything, but you should rethink the "No JRPG" thing and play Persona. And this is coming from someone who likes neither anime, nor JRPGs. Good games are good games and P4 is simply a good game, worthy of attention.

Go with Final Fantasy Tactics, The War of Lions.
It's just incredibly good, with interesting characters, plot twists, and an old history style the rivals George R.R. Martin from the Game of Thrones series. So good, one of my top five games ever!
Edit: Oh and the gameplay is also great! Strategy with RPG stuff and the Jobs system that makes characters super dynamic! Also some of the hardest boss fights ever. XD

Does this extend to japanese SRPG's?

Becuase if you're open to a good SRPG, of the turn based variety, offering a sdteep challenge and a lot of time spent pouring your effort into chracters:

{i]Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together[/i]
and
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

Both of those are excellent turn based strategy rpg's, both are also pretty much ports of older games, both live on the PS store for a good price though. War of the Lions had a complete script rewrite and new cutscenes and voice acting to flesh it out.

Both stories are also very far removed from the typical JRPG crap and instead are very much about their worlds and politics.

As for western RPG's? Can't help you much as I only recently got a PSVita and haven't delved for a western rpg yet.

Suppose the Monster Hunter games might be worth a luck even if they aren't really RPG's...

You killed off any hopes of a good thread when you ruled out Japanese RPGs as an option.

Anyway, Trails in the Sky. The PC version of these games haven't gotten a Western localization yet, or I'd recommend that, instead. This entire franchise is fantastic and demands to be played. One of the PSP musts. Definitely better than anything Square Enix has offered the PSP.

Sorry, gonna ignore the non JRPG part cause there really aren't any non-JRPG's that are either well known (that are good) or very good in itself. With that in mind...

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony. That is probably one of my fave PSP games ever, and I highly recommend it. It's wonderfully designed, music is fantastic, characters and art style are great, etc etc.

Oh, and another vote for Persona 3 Portable

I was gonna mention Knights in the Nightmare but it's a SRPG like everyone else has mentioned.

The only games I can think that might fit your criteria better would be Monster Hunter and God Eater Burst plus the upcoming Black Rock Shooter localisation.

There's also 3rd Birthday an ARPG with guns.

Spending a few hours looking for non-J RPGs, I came to the conclusion that I there aren't many, and the ones that exist are lesser ports.

I've played some tactical RPGs in the past and I like them, but I don't find any that seem better than TRPGs I already played before. I did really enjoy Jeanne D'arc when I played it a long time ago.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, and it's OK to offer something that doesn't completely fit the requirements I posted if you think that the game is really amazing and will blow my mind.

Well.... you said no JRPG's but it doesn't really act like one. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. It's one of my top five games of all time(however much that means to you) and it is a grid based tactics sort of game. It's set in this pseudo-western land with knights, magic, holy stones, and all that goodness.

Your avatar fits your comment. Just felt like saying that.

Also, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony is an update of Lunar: Silver Star Story. I had it on PS1. Great game, some tough bosses, and some interesting characters. Looks like they mostly just updated the art from what I saw.

Still looking for Lunar: Eternal Blue. I played a demo some years ago, but didn't buy the game.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is amazing!

The Star Ocean remakes are good.

Breath of Fire 3 but you have to import it from EU I think.

Valkyria Chronicles is a fun SRPG, as are Tactics Ogre and FF:Tactics.

Art and Music was all re-mastered, remixed and many other things were re-designed. New voice actors too. It was so amazing~ <3

Can't believe I forgot about The 3rd Birthday o.o It's one of my fave, if not THE fave game on PSP for me. Was so challenging~ Oh, and even though you said no button mashy stuff, I do have to give major points to God Eater Burst. Fantastic game and lots of fun to go back to later on down the road
