Plot dependent mini games, are little games that must be completed for the game to continue, or the mission to continue. The Mini-Games sometimes seem out of place in the game, such as in Final Fantasy X-2 doing a back rubbing game. If you fail the minigame then you have to restart it or skip the mission.

But I was thinking... "Why".

Why should your progress in a mission be dictated by using a skill that is normally not required in a game. I can understand games having them as a way to reak rewards that are not needed to complete the mission, but minigames that HAVE to be done in order to pass are just plain annoying.

If I'm playing an rpg and am worrying about attacks, getting my white mage to buff my black mage, I shouldn't have to worry about a quick time minigame or a memorization minigame, or suddenly being told a vague clue then told to go find what ever they were talking about.

That's not why we play games, if we want mini-games plaguing the games then we'll buy a Wii. I can fully understand mini-games used as a system for offering bonus' but giving minigames that may be very difficult for some due to it relying on skills that you don't have, or are not "needed" to play the game is just plain fool hardy.

Now Mini-games that play off of the skills "needed" for the game is a different story, as those can be enjoyable and depending how they are implemented can make sense in the situation and add to the immersion.

[HEADING=1]TL;DR[/HEADING]

Can you name some plot dependent mini-games that were silly, or out of place for the game?

Also why do you think Dev's implement mini-games like the aforementioned.

Do the swoop races in KotOR count? Because for the first one, you HAVE to do it, but all of the others, they are optional.
All of the Ratchet and Clank mini games where you have to hack the computer terminals, too. I despised those.

The linking of electricity in Timesplitters Future Perfect.

It wasn't hard, just unnecessary.

Hi dududf!

I found Bioshocks ones annoying.

They implement them to save them having to come up with an actual developed idea.
Heyyy, I'm back.

Turns out my Mobo hit the shitter, followed by my video card. Also one of my hard drives may be next.

And now I'm (slowly) downloading all of my stuff back ;)

Worst computer virus ever.

Yes those count. They were also extremely annoying.

Does Blitzball in FF X count?
You need to do it to progress in the story but have it as an option every time you use a save point so you never need do it again.

The only one that comes to mind is the table hockey game in Beyond Good and Evil (if you wanted to get all the pearls). You have to reload if you lose because it's 1000 credits per challange and it takes too long to raise that kind of money for such a short mini game.

The Donkey Kong arcade game in Donkey Kong 64, was never good with retro games so I ended up never completing DK 64.

Flyods shootout missions in Jet Force Gemini. They're optionall except one which you have to get gold in.

Any of AC2's Truth puzzles - optional but the reward is to shed light on the overall plot.

My hard drives fucked, and thanks to the fact the weather conditions are now positively Canadian around here (tee hee) I can't get the bastard fixed. I would do it myself, but I need a new Hard Drive circuit board.
Just realized that I'm like 2 posts from 2k posts.

I must make something epic.

I found it kinda fun :)

But it looks as if your problems shall be remedied come the sequel.

I don't really mind mini games, like the work ones in Fable 2 (you know, blacksmithing, woodcutting) went with the atmosphere, and lockpicking in Oblivion was kinda believable and cool.

Review your computer?
Too much swearing involved... I don't want to get banned on my 2k post, that'd just be ironic in a fashion.

Hop onto STEAM I'll brain storm with you, because I'm NOT blowing my 2k post by contemplating what I'll do for my 2k post.
I can't, my computers broke and you can't log into steam on a mac.

You're on your own, I'm not sure if PM's count.
PM's don't count. Group posts, do, however.

Blitzball actually was a pretty cool minigame. kinda reminded me of that old Pigskin Football game where you beat the other players with spiked clubs and stuff like that

A little bit too much math added in there, but it was fun when you get the hang of it, and have learned some helpful skills to equip.

The minigame involving trying to pull off the Jeckt Shot was pretty lame. I hated that thing as I never could get it right.
