Anyway, they're mostly ways of splitting up posters into two groups; those who want to have intelligent discussion, and those who are looking for badges/postcount boosts.

On topic, (or at least, as close as I can get,) define "pointless." Some people would say that there is no point to a thread about, say, kittens. (They're wrong. Kittens rule.) Some people would also say there is no point in spam. Some people find no point in video games. Would you care to elaborate on what you mean by "pointless?"

Thing is, people will just call what ever they don't like "pointless" as a dismissal without even thinking if it could be used for worthwhile discussion.

That's a perfect example. Potential for intelligent conversation? yup. within forum guidelines? You better believe it. Yet people cry for it's lock because it offends them, or they didn't even bother to think about it's potential.
