Tasha's mouth fell open as Knight fell to the ground, unconscious. She rushed over rubbing her hand along the top of it's head. "Hey you did great buddy." She said quietly. Knights eyes opened slightly, and it tried floating again. "Shhh buddy it's alright, you just rest." She said tapping it's pokeball against it's body. It disappeared with a flash of red. She sighed as she stood up. "Yup you won. And sure I'll follow you around, though I warn you now don't use retainer, I'll just end up hitting you. And I doubt I can learn much from you, at least my pokemon listen." She said with a raised eyebrow and a smug grin.

Slateport was a flurry of activity, trainers and Pokemon were running all over, battling and chatting with each other. In the middle of all this sat Sarah, who struggling with the brand new Pokedex she had just received. So far the device had resisted all of her attempts to turn on. An impatient Pecker squawked at her as she turned the device over again and poked fruitlessly at the screen.

"Yea, yea we can go once I figure out how to turn this damn thing on!" Sarah snapped back, frustrated at herself. The Holo Caster was working fine thankfully, one red and several blue dots were blinking on it, with the number 5 displayed prominently.

"-Per!"

"Oh, Pecker!" Sarah cried as the irate Pelipper jumped up and knocked the Pokedex out of her hand. The device fell and hit the ground, the screen lighting up as it did.

"Yay, it's on!" the young girl said, picking the device up and dusting it off. "You should be more careful though Pecker, you could have broken it!" she continued, scolding the Pelipper who looked away, pretending like he'd done nothing wrong. Sighing heavily, Sarah examined the dots on the Holo Caster.

"Looks like there's someone nearby, let's go meet em! I wonder if they'll be open to teaming up?" Sarah said, walking down the street as Pecker jumped onto her shoulder. Turning the corner she spied the trainer the dot was highlighting on the Caster. He was dressed in a lab coat of all things, but more importantly, he was riding an Arcanine!

"Aaaaaaahhh you have an Arcanine, that's so cool! Oh, oh, can I pet him? He won't mind will he?" Sarah gushed as she ran up to the trainer, unable to contain her excitement.

Cyrus puffed up at Tasha's remark. "Hmph! Iliya won because she's smart and able to fight effectively on her own initiative! And I'll bring her back out another match if you ever sock me!" he said, turning his nose up as best he could, given than he was shorter than Tasha.

"Anyways, we should probably investigate these other blue dots. Come! Let us seek out further battles, my retai...er, I mean partner." Cyrus turned off the music on his Pokegear and flipped out his Holo Caster again. After that he reached for his Luxury Ball and released Reza. The Persian walked along his master's other side obediently, although he occasional turned his head to examine Tasha.

He began walking in the direction of the next blue dot, which brought him to a boy riding an Arcanine and wearing a labcoat for some odd reason. Another dot picked up on the Holo Caster as a girl with a Pelipper quickly ran over to his side. She seemed more interested in conversing that battling the boy. Cyrus leaned over to Tasha. "What say you? Looks to me like we both might have another battle ahead of us." he smirked lowered his hand to rub Reza's ear, prompting the cat to purr lightly.

As the speech was finishing, Sean's desire to not participate increased; he was certain this competition would be more trouble than it was worth, even though he was rather interested in learning more about that stone. Since he already owned a holo caster and a pokedex, and the ones that were being given out were rigged for the tournament, he didn't really see much point in joining other than indulging Ragna and Sol.

"If we are to enter this tournament, keep in mind that we would be doing so because you two want it, and that would drag Sponni into this too." he said, throwing quick glances at them, before raising his head to face Sponni and motioning him to come down. With all three of his pokemon facing him, he continued.

"There's one thing that needs to be clear if we are to enter this tournament. Inevitably, you'll all end up in battles. There's gonna be a lot of pain involved, and we don't know what we will be facing. We may end up being overwhelmed, and the prospect of losing is... high." at the thought of seeing his friends beaten up, Sean's face grew dark. "I'll only join if all three of you are certain you want to see this through. Well?"

Sol and Sponni nodded excitedly, while Ragna, pumped up by the prospect of beating strangers up, let out a roar.

"...Very well, then." Sean said whilst letting out a defeatist sigh, "Get in your pokeballs. I'll let you out after I sign up and come up with a plan."

-------

After reluctantly picking up his second holo caster and pokedex, Sean left the row and started puzzlingly looking around at the other competitors.

So much for redundancy... Let's see who I have been paired with.

Sean turned on his new holo caster, which displayed a map of Hoenn, along with a red dot and another seven blue ones.

I'm number... 26. And these other numbered dots must be my -urgh- rivals. Or allies. Hopefully allies.

He zoomed in on the map, and turned to look around.

Right. I suppose the first course of action should be to try and group up with the others. Let's hope they are reasonable. Let's start with the closest... Hmm, 4 and 10 are nearby, and they seem to have branded together already. A promising start!

With hasty steps, Sean swiftly closed in on their location. As he was about to get close enough to introduce himself, however, he saw a Metang throw a straight at a Dragonair, much like how a professional boxer would his opponent.

"..."

With a sharp 180 degree turn, Sean walked back towards the way he came from, double-timing his steps.

This wasn't promising! It wasn't promising at all! It was the exact opposite of promising!

As he was on the move, he checked his holo caster once again. A few steps away from him stood another one of his riv- allies! staring at his pokedex and holo caster in confusion.

Another one.

After his almost run-in with the other two, Sean was hesitant to introduce himself. If possible, now that his Pokemon were in their Pokeballs, he would rather avoid battling people. Still, he reasoned, I'll have to run into them eventually. Might as well get it over with. Whatever *it* may be.

"Greetings!" he called out as he walked towards his maybe-ally-maybe-rival, lifting his hat as a sign of etiquette (he had learned all about that kind of thing in Kalos), having the best friendly smile he could work out, "You must be one of my designated allies. Number 40, Thomas Lindberg, correct?"

Here's hoping he isn't the kind to start challenges the moment he makes eye contact.

"Oh, hi-Uh. Sorry, you must be #3, correct?"

Jonah nodded. "Yeah, you're number 1, at least that's what the Holo Caster tells me." He examined the other. The boy was younger than him, though likely not more than by 2-3 years, and had a Goomy, a pokemon Jonah had encountered during his trip to its native region.

"Sorry, my name is Glenn. And I'd rather not battle just yet. It's just I'd rather not be eliminated just as the tournament begins...."

For a moment, Jonah just looked at the guy to make sure he was being for real. Was he actually this lucky? Then he smiled, brightly, natural charisma making him stand out even more among the grassy surroundings.

"Oh thank god, I'm not really ready to fight yet either," he admitted. "My name is Jonah, I figured that we could discuss teaming up or something, to be completely honest. I think it'll be easier to pick fights once there's more than one of us, since I don't think a lone trainer would want to challenge two people right after each other." He tilted his head.

"Or, if you'd rather not do that, I suppose that's fine. I certainly wouldn't bother you further. I just figured, since that Steven said something about allies, we could try that out." Another pause, then, from having Apollo jump out of his hands and over to Glenn and Goomy, he spoke again.

"Oh, this is Apollo, by the way," he said, pointing at the Swirlix, whom was eager to get to know the two others. Arthur kept hiding behind Jonah's leg, peeking out in a careful manner, while Richard bowed politely when it was his turn to be introduced. "And this is Arthur and Richard, though I mostly just call him Rich. We normally don't fight a lot, since we--- well, most of us prefer competitions, but we decided it might be a refreshing change of pace."

What the hell is going on with his clothing?
is what Thomas thought after seeing one of his designated target/companion. He almost blurted it out loudly but managed to stop himself. He would rather not insult his would be rival or companion at this stage of the tournament.

Still, the clothing this guy had was definitely something. Black tuxedo wear with a trench coat, reverse trilby, orange glasses, fingerless gloves and a blue backpack. Now that is unique.

"Ohh yeah, sure. You must be..."
Thomas checked his holo caster for a name.
"Sean Gallagher."

Thomas looked at Sean for whole two minutes without saying a single word because he wasn't really sure how to deal with the situation. A random guy starts talking to you in some ridiculous clothing and you are suppose to be cool about it. It felt a bit surreal.

Finally, Thomas said to Sean:
"Umm, can I first go to the beach and let Jips rest there before we continue this discussion?"

He then woke up Jips and started directing him towards the beach before he could get a reply from Sean.

"Ohh yeah, sure. You must be... Sean Gallagher."

"That would be me, indeed!" Sean replied, imitating the stylish bows of the Kalos people, "Pleasure to make yer acquantance!"

On the one hand, Sean was happy he didn't receive the response he was expecting ("YES YOU MUST BE MY RIVAL LET'S FIGHT TO SEE WHO IS THE BEST RAWR!"[footnote]Slight Exaggerations may apply.[/footnote]). On the other, the cowish, out-of-focus gaze he was receiving made him feel rather awkward, and wonder whether he had to choose between the company of hot-blooded combat enthusiasts and simple-minded docile Slopoke-wannabes. The more time passed as this Thomas was starring at him, the more irritated Sean became.

This is why I don't really like human company.

Then, Thomas woke up from his trance.

"Umm, can I first go to the beach and let Jips rest there before we continue this discussion?"

"But-"

Seemingly ignoring Sean, Thomas turned around, woke up his Torterra and started walking.

Sean's hand violently crashed into his face. It was a knee-jerk reaction to being stared at for two minutes and then completely ignored; he would have most likely yelled otherwise. This man was rude. Even Sean wasn't this socially awkward, and that was an achievement in and out of itself! He was this close to abandoning this Thomas Lindberg and going away on his own, but he remembered that he didn't have much choice in the matter.

Ok. So maybe first impressions weren't that good. Maybe the guy sucks at first impressions. Maybe starring at people is his way of saying 'Pleased to meet you too'. Must be a cultural thing from where he's from. Let's try one more time.

"You wouldn't mind if I accompanied you, would you? Since we've been branded together, might as well stick around." he said as he caught up, smiling, "Though I'm not sure the beach is the best place to go. That's where one of the champions is. I don't think your Torterra will be finding much rest there."

"What the hell?"
is what came out of Thomas mouth when he saw the line on the beach. It was a line of trainers waiting to challenge Diantha[footnote]And ultimately fail.[/footnote] and it stretched almost to the stairway into Slateport

Thomas had almost given up until he saw that eastern side of the beach was almost completely empty for whatever reason. He rushed there with Jips to find a empty place and then proceeded to dig in a small hole for the Torterra to rest in.

"Tor..."

Jips was satisfied and comfortable with this place. The sun shining on his back and soft, hot sand on his lower body put him an extremely pleasant mood. Thomas then gave Jips apples from his back, which then put him to sleep.

Thomas then clapped his hands together and was satisfied with his work.

"Ok, Jips is asleep and I need to go shopping. Let's talk while on the way there ok?" he said to Sean while he put his bag with the Pokedex and Holo caster on a branch of the tree that was on Jips back.

"Hmph! Iliya won because she's smart and able to fight effectively on her own initiative! And I'll bring her back out another match if you ever sock me!" Tasha smiled and crossed her arms. "Uh huh, I'm sure, one problem with that though short-stuff: I know what to expect out of her now. And nice save by the way." She said following after Cyrus. She crossed her hands behind her head as they walked eyeing the shorter man. His Persian certainly seemed to like him. "hey don't eye me like that, not my fault the jewel in your head is pretty."

"What say you? Looks to me like we both might have another battle ahead of us." Tasha was snapped out her daze by Cyrus's comment. She eyed the Pelipper and Arcanine with a smile. "Sure why not, it'll give me a chance to wake Raleigh's lazy butt up." She said tossing a pokeball from her belt. With a small flash of light an Aron appeared, snoozing away. "'Ey, wake up." She said prodding the Aron with her foot. His eyes fluttered open and he stared up at Tasha. "Yeah that's right lazy shell up and at 'em. We got new friends to introduce ourselves too." She said nodding her head towards the two new trainers. With a yawn the Aron got to his feet. "After you short-stuff." Tasha said with a smile.

Thomas, continuing his rather tedious disregard of Sean's words -and existence-, walked on towards the beach, only to, at the sight of the amount of trainers that had gathered there, let out a loud "What the hell?".

"See what I mean? The place is packed! You're better off going to Route 110 if you wanna find a place for your Torterra to rest."

Thomas, however, wasn't budging, blatantly ignoring Sean's advice and leaving him feel rather irritated. Sean was never the kind of person to seek attention. The opposite, in fact. He would always do his best to avoid crowds, going as far as finding alternative ways of passing routes filled with challenge-hungry trainers. But this man, this Thomas Lindberg, was completely impossible to work with, seemingly living in his own world and only letting others in when it suits him. Minutes passed until Thomas found the eastern side of the beach to be devoid of life and, after seemingly less than a moment of contemplation, decided to leave his Torterra there.

"More people are gathering, you know. I don't think it's a good place to leave-"

"Ok, Jips is asleep and I need to go shopping. Let's talk while on the way there ok?"

Oh? Now you decide to acknowledge my existence? Sean thought as Thomas walked past him. After rubbing his forehead with visible irritation and opting to not question why Thomas decided to leave most of his belongings on the back of a sleeping pokemon in a beach that was swarming with people, Sean, rather reluctantly, followed.

"....I just figured, since that Steven said something about allies, we could try that out."
Glenn nodded, thankful that he wasn't paired up with a sociopath, and pulled the Holo Caster up face his head.
"Hold on, I'm going to send a message."
He tapped the screen and tapped each number except for #3. He then tapped the translucent green phone button, sending a message to his acquaintances.
After a moment there were no responses, but the message would be recorded and heard for anyone that doesn't respond anyway, so Glenn began.
"Hello." He said, adjusting the strand of brown hair that fell onto his brow. "I am Glenn- with Holo Caster #1, there's also #3 behind me," he said, tilting the Holo Caster behind his head to reveal Jonah.

"We're up on Route 110, and we're friendly." He said, looking back towards Jonah. "If you're interested, meet us up here."

"Hold on, I'm going to send a message."

Unsure of what the other wanted, he just nodded.

A message? I wonder what kind of message that would be...

Well, Glenn didn't seem like a bad guy either way, so he was sure it was fine. Besides, people had to trust each other to work together. Because of that, he didn't try to read the other's screen, instead picked up Apollo who had gotten a bit impatient from Glenn not paying attention to him.

"Hello. I am Glenn- with Holo Caster #1, there's also #3 behind me,"

When Jonah noticed that the holo Caster was turned to him, he smiled friendly. "Hi there, I'm Jonah." While he didn't know who the receiver was, being friendly was the key to-- well to anything! Even becoming a famous star, no, actually, especially becoming a star. Apollo made sure to get the Caster pointed at him for a moment, and even Arthur wanted to check it out, so he climbed up to Jonah's shoulder. Rich just watched, likely wondering when the fighting would be starting.

"We're up on Route 110, and we're friendly. If you're interested, meet us up here."

"Yeah, we are," Jonah replied, eagerly. "It'll be fun getting to know you people." Getting more allies sounded like a really good a idea, if they got there, at least. Waiting for a response, or Glenn to turn off the message, he tilted his head.

"So... now we just wait?" he asked.

Before they could approach the two new trainers, Tasha could here four identical chimes from their Holo-Caster. What followed was a message from a boy calling them too route 110 just north of Slateport. "Well that makes things easy." She said with a raised eyebrow. "Sorry shorty, looks like our double battle will have to wait." She said pulling out Raleigh's pokeball. "Sorry for waking you up bud, back to sleep. Return." She said as the Aron huffed and disappeared back into it's pokeball. "Besides we'll have a chance to battle them again later. We all will before this thing is over. C'mon let's head to the Pokemon center before we head out. Don't want the dragon of your tiring herself out now." She said with a smile before heading towards the pokemon center.

Cyrus glared at Tasha. "Short stuff? Really? Well, if that's how it's going to be, I'll just have to keep calling you my retainer." he said, his mouth twisting into a smirk. Before Cyrus could approach the new pair of opponents, his Holo Caster chimed in a message from some boy. As did Tasha's. It appeared that another two rivals were attempting to contact the others with connected Holo Casters.

"Sorry shorty, looks like our double battle will have to wait. Besides we'll have a chance to battle them again later. We all will before this thing is over. C'mon let's head to the Pokemon center before we head out. Don't want the dragon of your tiring herself out now."

"A fine plan. Iliya is too fierce to tire from fighting a mere knight, but having her fully invigorate will still make crushing the plebs easier." Cyrus said, then shouted at the boy with the Arcanine and the girl with the Pelipper. "COUNT YOURSELVES LUCKY FOR NOW, PLEBS! NEXT TIME WE CROSS PATHS, MY RETAINER AND I SHALL EVISCERATE YOU!"

Cyrus waved his ring-clad hand dismissively at the pair, before turning around and heading to the centre with Tasha. Reza glared briefly at the Arcanine before following his master.

Thomas and Sean were walking towards the market when suddenly, they were both hit with the smell of the freshest bread, made out of 5 different berries, cooked slowly in baking oven powered by a Torkoal. The smell was delicious enough that it had already tempted Thomas into buying three loaves of it.

Thomas looked at Sean and said:
"So what are you planning to do, with the tournament I mean."

"Ya know samll fry, the more you act like that the sooner your gettin your ass kicked outta the Tournament." Tasha said with a raised eyebrow as they walked into the pokemon center. "Besides who even uses the words Pleb and Retainer anymore?" She asked handing over her pokeballs to the nurse on duty. After a few minutes she got them back. "Thank you Miss." She said to the nurse with a wide smile an a little bow. "Now let's head up to route one-ten. I'm sure this Glenn and Jonah are getting pretty antsy." She thought for a moment." Oh! Idea!" She pulled out her own Holo-Caster and held it up. With a few taps she sent a message over to Gleen. "Heya Glenn! I'm Tasha, Number 4 Me and Number 10 here...."She said tilting her Holo-caster down and over to get Cyrus in the shot. "Are heading up now, figured I'd give you a heads up." She finished with a smile and a thumbs up. She slipped the Holo-Caster back into her bag. "C'mon short stuff, lets get up there. The others should be getting there soon themselves."

Glenn closed his Holo Caster and slumped himself against the nearby hedge, listening intently to Jonah.
"So... now we just wait?"

"Basically." He said, pulling out a small bag of pokeblocks and leaving them in a trail for the Goomy.
"You can call the others, but I've told them where we are. Those that care enough will meet us up here, and we'll see how that turns out. Those that don't, well..... Honestly I just want to get away from Slateport. What about you?"

"You can call the others, but I've told them where we are. Those that care enough will meet us up here, and we'll see how that turns out. Those that don't, well..... Honestly I just want to get away from Slateport. What about you?"

"Oh, well, I don't have much of a plan," Jonah admitted, and sat down to examine the Goomy as it went for the pokeblocks. "I just sort of want to make my pokemon happy. Also, meeting people is nice. I'm sure we can go away from Slateport, though, I've always wanted to see the entire region, and there's competition halls everywhere, so when I'm defeated, I won't be far from one."

Apollo watched intently, making the weird sound he made when he wanted something. "Do you want some food?" he asked the Swirlix, and Jonah reached into bag and pulled out the box with pokepuffs in it, before handing a pink one over to Arthur, feeding another to Apollo, and leaving the box open for Rich to take whichever he wanted. When he was done, he closed the box and put it away, though all that resulted in was the Swirlix tugging -or rather, biting playfully- at his arm, wanting more.

"You can wait," Jonah told him, smiling, and pushed the ball of sticky fur slightly away. "Besides, you've still got some berries hidden in your fur, don't you?"

As this happened, Rich had noticed Glenn's other pokeballs, and gestured towards them, wondering if any of the stranger's pokemon would fight him. Arthur was now closer to the Goomy, trying to approach it in a friendly way. When Jonah noticed what the Gallade was doing, he stood up, Arthur wouldn't cause any trouble, but Rich was acting a little too impatient for his liking.

"He already said he didn't want to fight," he scolded the Gallade, before turning to Glenn. "Hopefully he'll get a bit less impatient once someone who wants to fight him arrives," he told the other. "Anyways, where are you from? And, if you don't mind me asking, you do have other pokemon, right?"

Ethan fiddled with his new Pokedex with an almost child-like sense of awe and wonder. Professor Oak often gave them to particularly promising researchers and trainers when they went into the field, so he wasn't entirely ignorant of their functioning, but he had never owned one. That was something special. It had everything he'd come to expect - a huge database of all kinds of pokemon imaginable, a medical encyclopedia regarding pokemon care, and, of course...

"Hey, Kelvin, say cheese!" He pointed the Pokedex's sensor towards his trusty canine friend, who tilted his head at the contraption. The Pokedex's speaker blared to life as Ethan pressed the appropriate button: "Arcanine, the Legendary Pokemon. Its magnificent bark conveys a sense of majesty. Anyone hearing it can't help but grovel before it."

Kelvin preened under the Dex's praise, loosing a loud bark as if in affirmation. Ethan rolls his eyes and stows the device, a smile tugging at his lips. "Down, boy. No need to let it go to your head." He starts to look over the other device handed to him at registration - a Holo-Caster, if memory served - and started looking it over. It was proudly displaying a '7' on its side, along with a local-area map overlaid with several dots. Were these the other people he was supposed to seek out?

Well, no matter. He had his very own Pokedex now! Sure, he'd try his hardest, but he had little interest in actually winning this competition. Although... if he did well enough, would that mean he'd have more opportunities to study strong trainers and their Pokemon?

"Aaaaaaahhh you have an Arcanine, that's so cool! Oh, oh, can I pet him? He won't mind will he?" He's pulled from his thoughts by a girl waving enthusiastically. Kelvin once again started preening under the praise, loosing a tiny gout of flame. "Heh, I don't think he'll mind when you put it like that." Ethan hops down onto the street, still fiddling with the Holo-Caster as he addresses the girl. "His name is Kelvin, by the way."

"Heh, I don't think he'll mind when you put it like that. His name is Kelvin, by the way." said the Arcanine's trainer as he hopped off its back. Kelvin seemed to be enjoying the attention, letting out a tiny burst of flame as Sarah approached.

"Hello Kelvin, my name's Sarah!" the young trainer said, hesitantly reaching out and stroking the Pokemon's fur. "Oh, you're so fluffy!" she exclaimed, scratching him behind the ears. The large Pokemon was warm to the touch, which she guessed was to be expected from a Fire type.

Sarah would have continued to pet Kelvin but she was interupted by her new Holo-Caster beeping at her.

"...We're up on Route 110, and we're friendly. If you're interested, meet us up here."

"Huh, looks like we've been paired with some reasonable guys." Sarah said to the Pelipper on her shoulder who squawked in reply.

"COUNT YOURSELVES LUCKY FOR NOW, PLEBS! NEXT TIME WE CROSS PATHS, MY RETAINER AND I SHALL EVISCERATE YOU!"

Sarah jumped as a shout rang out. Looking around she saw two trainers turning and walking away from them, a girl and a very short young man. It seemed that he had been the one to shout at them. Looking back to Kelvin's trainer she shrugged.

"You should have got that same message yea? Wanna go and check it out? Oh and I'm Sarah by the way, sorry I introduced myself to your Pokemon but not to you." she said, bowing slightly and smiling.
