Pokemon are cool.
Samurai are cool.
History is cool (says the History Major).
Ergo, Pokemon Conquest is cool!

Ok for those who have yet to see this, Pokemon Conquest is basically a mashup of Pokemon (Duh) and Nobunaga's Ambition. The gameplay is pretty simple: basically the player befriends pokemon and uses them to battle warriors and warlords in the hopes of unifying the various nations of the land. Its a great game and a very cool concept with its characters based on figures from real life.

I got to thinking though; how cool would it be if this idea was pushed a little further? What if a game like PC took place in another time, during another conflict?

My question to you, my fellow Escapists, is what time period or conflict would you base a game like PC in if you were running the show.

Personally, as cliche as it is, I would have to say WWII. Yes, you can't throw a stone in any direction without hitting a Nazi in Gaming, but think about it. WWII was the last global war where the entire planet itself was the battlefield. Plus, there was a ton of incredibly interesting people during WWII outside of Hitler. How cool would it be to to take a part in the various campaigns simultaneously meeting some of those people? To island hop in the Pacific Theatre with water pokemon and General MacArthur one minute and then use flying pokemon with the Tuskegee Airmen in Italy the next?

Anyways, thats my two cents. What are your ideas?

WW1? as the fallen Jigglypuff litter the battlefield one must ask, what is the price of a mile?

Or the Cold War? Doduo's using experimental fighter jets. What could go wrong? Two heads are better than one

War, war never changes.

Pokemon cold war gets my vote. Or the Vietnam war. "I went in a pikachu, I cam back a raichu".

Or the Indian Mutiny, or maybe the Napoleonic wars. We can maybe have time traveling Pokemon fighting wars across time.

OP: Seriously speaking, what is this?

Pokemon Conquest looked good, but I never got around to getting it.

That said, it seems like the sort of game that works much better when the humans don't have guns. So, with that in mind, I vote for the same subject I'd really like Total War to gover, the Three Kingdoms period in China.

That could also provide some context for Lt Surge's claim in Red and Blue that Pokemon saved him during the war.

Anyway, I'd be down for more Pokemon Conquest games, that game was freaking awesome. If I was going to pick a time period though, I'd like to see the following:

Medieval Europe. Control the Scots alongside their hardy Steel-types, wresting the Isles from the uptight and proud English Normal-types. Take your Scandinavian Ice-types and expand into the land of the hardy Fighting-types of the Holy Roman Empire. Or something.

Napleonic Wars. As either the French, Russian or Empire forces, fight and expand through the main fields of combat, and either try to prevent Napoleon (who should partner with Empoleon, clearly) taking Europe or seize control of the French armies and make Napoleon's empire Europe-wide.

American Frontier. Pokemon cowboys.

I can't deny that the idea of having Pokemon as a SRPG is cool, since it is certainly a hit in the RPG department, and it has also shown promise in the Dungeon Crawler region. However, the fears that I had about this title before it's release where similar to remnant issues with the Dungeon Crawler series, and only got worse upon it's release.

In the Dungeon Crawler series, you were only allowed to have a four attacks. Not a big shocker, but it would've been nice to be able to switch between your attacks from time to time to help you in certain missions or areas (i.e. Swapping in Flamethrower for it's range and also Thunderbolt for the type advantage). I also didn't like how you can't create a formation while in battle. Your allies might be stuck fighting the Pokemon, face to face, but you can move away to ignore the fight or move slightly to gain an advantage. If we were able to make formations a la Four Swords during battle, that would be awesome and implore a little more strategy. Also, basic attacks and items are more effective than your four attacks. Good, bad, I don't know. It just makes having four attacks pointless when your items and basic attacks can pull off a better job. Also, you couldn't control how you acquired new allies or evolved your Pokemon.

In the SRPG, you are limited to one attack and some of the previously mentioned issues remain present. When I look at games like Disgaea, FF Tactics, & Tactics Ogre, Pokemon just doesn't compare. The point of an SRPG is to allow you're units to grow, get stronger, learn various skills and attacks, and to experiment with different strategies other than type disadvantage and the only units for the job.

So for me, Pokemon Conquest is a pass; if I want to play an SRPG, there are plenty of new, old, and popular titles that will more effectively scratch my SRPG itch.

Those sound like they would make awesome games!

I've played and beaten the game. It combined Pokemon, Nobunga's Ambition AND Final Fantasy Tactics.

Since I've played all three of the afore mentioned games and liked them, you can guess what my reaction was while playing this game.

First Contact War! Not the one from Mass Effect.
It has Pokemon fighting in space and therefore it'll be infinitely better.

Try Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it's slightly less detailed, but the core concepts are still there.

OP: Pokemon American Revolution. Take control of Great Britain and their army of elite fire Pokemon, the Rebels and their low-level grass types, or as France and their water-types, and pull the American Rebels' out of the fire (pun intended).

I've never touched Pokémon Conquest, but if that chick actually fights any of these dudes... Well, that's one badass Jigglypuff.

Never picked it up. Now I can imagine it being awesome. How's all of you guys' opinion on this game? I may try this as soon as I get the chance. The premise itself is pretty interesting.

I only played the first and second generations, and I remember it being said, or at least heavily hinted that Clefairies came from the moon. Other than that, I don't remember anything about other Pokemon coming from space.

Again, a very cool concept. I wonder what pokemon George Washington and Benedict Arnold would use.

Interesting. That's one crossover I never would've dreamed seeing.

Perhaps this is the history of how the Pokemon world became what it is today- the battles between famous historical leaders to determine the course of a nation. It was once the sport of kings deciding conflicts, only to eventually be democratized and given to everyone who wanted to be a trainer. Would certainly be a better alternative than human wars since even Nobunaga's Pokemon will only faint when defeated. For once, Pokemon battles really are serious business!

Bill said it in the show, I think. I remember an owlship like pod with silhouettes.

I wouldn't go as far as WWII. The Sengoku period is far enough in the past to be full of romanticism but going back to WWII, WWI, or even the Civil War is when war stories have a "war is hell" element that doesn't mesh well with Pokemon (at least not yet, we'll see how they push the boundaries in the future).

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is very reasonable as Koei also makes Dynasty Warriors, or maybe the 100 Years War.
