Hey guys, so i wanna ask, should i get a DSi or 3DS if im only intending to play pokemon games? Have been reading up on an article which says that Nintendo will stop developing the 3D system until in the future, so i was wondering if it would be risky for me to buy a 3DS. Considering the battery life and the price, i would pretty much like to buy a DSi, but am wondering if Gamefreak will ever produce a 3DS only game for the main series. Hoping to get you guys' opinion on this!

Ha, I'm in the same predicament aswell. I don't know to that answer as my only reason to upgrade my DS Lite is that I'm fed up using that Wifi dongle to make the DS go online.
I suppose the advantage to getting the 3DS is getting that Dream Radar and Pokédex 3D Pro since it make used on the 3D but I can't say if the next Pokemon game will be out for the 3DS or on the next portable console.
I want to get an DSi but do I risk wasting my money when the next Pokemon game does come up for the 3DS?

Hiya,

I recently asked this question in the advice forum and with the help of a couple of guys, came to a conclusion. I decided that I'm going to buy a DSi and Pokemon White. Getting a 3DS is an expensive investment and buying one for what 'might' come out is incredibly risky. Black & White 2 is the next Pokemon game coming out and it's going to be for the DS. By the time the Pokemon game after that is released (likely a Saphire & Ruby remake), I imagine the 3DS would of had even further price drops.

DSi now + 3DS later is going to be a lot more expensive than 3DS now. If you're likely to buy a 3DS, you shouldn't buy a DS.

I'd agree if the OP's question wasn't solely for Pokemon. Both options are risky, but I think it's more risky to buy the more expensive, battery short 3DS when there might not be any Pokemon games for it.

The 3DS plays DS games like Pokemon Black & White.

I heard it has a couple of resolution problems. Honestly though it was the battery life that killed it for me. I'm buying the DSi because I have an 11 hour-ish flight and some days I'll be on trains for up to 4 hours. Dunno about the OP though.

Get a DS Lite. They're the best DSs out there. They're the smallest and don't have a hiked up price because of unnecessary crap like cameras that are useless anyway.

The only problem with the DS Lite is you need a WEB key thing if you want the DS Lite go online. Granted this isn't a problem if you use WiFi but it's a hassle to set it up while 3DS and DSi simply use the code thing that's under the router meaning far easier to get it online.

I honestly don't see a point in buying an outdated console unless you're REALLY strapped for cash.

It is a near certainty that game freack will at some point release a gen VI pokemon game that takes full advantage of the 3DS's graphical processing power and features, and thus will require a 3DS to play. So, if you want to play that you'd have to get a 3DS, which incidentally can also play the 6 latest pokemon games (that number of course including different versions).

Buying a DSi plus a 3DS later, even after price drops quite frankly would be a waste of money.

If you only EVER want to play the gen IV and V pokemon games, and have ABSOLUTELY no desire to play any 3DS games, upcoming or otherwise or the inevitable gen VI pokemon games, then get a DSi.

Otherwise, get a 3DS.

And they have a GBA cartridge slot. Yeah, DS Lite is definitely the way to go.

It has been reported that a 3D title for pokemon will be released soon... im just wondering if they'll be the main series. Thats the reason that made me consider about the 3DS. Otherwise, i would have definitely gone for the DSi just because of the battery life... im not really interested in the GBA slot, so DS lite wont be that appealing to me haha

As far as battery life is concerned. As long as you don't actually use the 3D, which quite honestly, only gives me a headache near instantly. It's quite a lot longer. I own both a DSi and a 3DS which I bought recently with my last pay. I don't regret it. For one, I could move over my Celebi, the green little legendary thing... Secondly, I now enjoy games such as Zelda and Starfox 64 (Loved that game on the N64). Granted, those games I've both played several times over before, but man.. the nostalgia is amazing. Didn't get the XL version though, I got this.. Zelda Anniversary edition. It's black and golden.

But on topic. Is it worth it if you only play Pokemon and you don't intend to get into any other good 3DS games? Probably not to be honest. I bought a 3DS because plenty of the titles appealed to me, and I've had no regret as of yet. But I wouldn't have done it if say, only pokemon titles were my interest.

Edit: I'd also like to add that, while it's possible there might be a pokemon game with 3D eventually, that won't be anytime soon and by then, you'd have a new version of the DS possibly. So again, unless you can look into other 3DS titles and go "That's pretty cool." you shouldn't get it for pokemon. Not yet at least. Black and White 2 won't be 3DS only as far as I know, but will use the 3DS somehow, I doubt it'll be largely game changing though.

If you have any of the GBA games, then get get a DS Lite without question, as the pokemon you get in those games can be transferred to Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heartgold, or Soulsilver, and from there they can be transferred to Black and White (assuming you have access to a second DS).

Also, I have a related question. Is it possible to trade between a 3DS and a DS Lite? Because if so, that would help convince me to shell out for a 3DS eventually.
