I have a little problem: Which Gengar are you afraid of? Which Starmie? None of those pokemons are a problem if they aren't in the game (or being used). Agatha's Gengar doesn't have any electric attacks.

I think you are forgetting that we are talking about a playthrough of pokemon blue. Take this: Slowbro doesn't have barrier. http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Slowbro_(Pok%C3%A9mon)/Generation_I_learnset#By_leveling_up

I was one of those people who used their starter pokemon for every fight and ended up only ever using other pokemon in the league fights when I was healing/ reviving my starter but when I did do a run where I used others I always made sure to have a Kadabra/Alakazam or Gengar ,a Gyrados, a Zapdos and a vileplume.

Fair enough, was thinking of PvP instead of PvE when I first posted, and nothing really counters Gyarados from trainers. And you're right that Slowbro doesn't get Barrier, he gets Reflect, which is better.

Also, since the main hurdle is the Elite Four, all of the other candidates I mentioned earlier do better. Water/Ice types destroy Lance, Water/Psychic wrecks Agatha and Bruno's whole team. Assuming the OP uses an Alakazam and Zapdos he/she mentioned, the third Water he/she chooses slots into the team better than Gyarados will.
