I love the Pokemon games because I honestly can't find anything else like them!

You wander around the world, catch little creatures that you care for and train, then, once they are strong enough, you battle them with other creatures other people have trained. Yes, you take the time to train them, but you really aren't the one doing any of the work. Battles are won by your Pokemon and victories are determined by their strengths, weaknesses and how well you trained them, not your own powers or abilities.

In most games you are leveling yourself or yourself and your companions up in preparation for the next big challenge, but I haven't seen any other games out there (apart from, arguably, Age of Empires and Civilization) where you are not a key player, where your actions determine and affect how well others would do in a situation, but when that situation happens you can't do anything but sit back and hope your training is the advantage the others need. It's fascinating.

So, my question is, ARE there other games out there like Pokemon? Where you train and strengthen OTHERS in preparation for something and THEY, not you, have to overcome it in the end? If so, please post you comments here, I would like to see what else is out there.

The only difference is in perspective.

In Pokemon, you are given a choice of which Pokemon to start with, and as you level them up they get stronger. You then gain the opportunity to get other Pokemon and level them up. You don't even need to keep your main Pokemon; he can be left on the curb if you really want.

Now, take Disgaea because it's highest on my mind currently. You start with about 5 characters and can level them up as you please. You can then chose to create more characters and level them up as well. There are main, story characters, yes, but you never actually have to use them. If you'd like, you could just leave them on the curb while your favourite female-warrior-wearing-a-belt-as-a-bra dishes out damage.

gah its going to make me so mad..i forgot the name of the game(s)

if i remember right you start off on a boat..or something like it.

there were a few of them, they were for the gameboy..color? or advance? can't remember which one but it was VERY SIMILAR to pokemon, there were different monsters out there and by beating them you had a small chance of having them join your team, and i remember i'd have 3-4 of them following me around like pikachu does with your main character in yellow, the game was A BLAST! there were different environments, alot of bosses could join your team (most of your team was past mini bosses lol)

if anyone knows what game im talking about..please let me know, i wish to get it again, it was so much fun! (one of the first mini bosses i remember was a fucking magic lamp, it was so awesome to have on your team!)

Lost Kingdoms for NGC is a lot like that, but with cards you summon. It's really good. So is the second one.
