First off, I will start of by saying I didn't know where to put this thread, so feel free to correct me.

Now on topic: I just had a thought, would a Pokemon MMO not only work, but me a really good game too? I mean, it's got all the things an MMO requires, in game and out;

  • A strong Fan Base
A Big Corporation to Back it
Easily Enough Designer to Make it Decent
And for in game, there is a huge variety of Pokemon to battle/catch, Loads of places to explore, and a main story line with lots of subplots from all the games. Admittedly there wouldn't be much variety for what races/factions the player could be, but apart from that, I think it would be a decent game. Just wandering what your thoughts are...

Yeah this has been done a lot and supposedly one is out by a third party developer, but its actually a walking malware.
An online Pokemon would ensure I could actually TRADE with someone , which would be nice.

Meh, I don't think it would really be all that great. The only difference I can see between a Pokemon MMO and the current gen Pokemon games is that you'll always technically be connected to online play, which isn't really enough of a reason to buy one. A Zelda MMORPG has more potential.

Yeah, it has, and it's also been talked about to death in miscellaneous threads.
Here is me caring.

Anyway, it's an amazing idea, but I don't know if Nintendo would ever take an MMO route, even if it'll print money. I can dream.

They should do an MMO were you be pokemon. I know Mystery Dungeon has done it, but it's not that good. You can't be all the pokemon in it.

I completely agree with you however there are a few incredibly large obsticles that stand in the way of this being made.

First and foremost is Nintendo's wireless service, it simply isn't set up for an MMO and if you think they would release it on the PC your out of your mind.

Secondly there's the problem of gamefreaks experience deficiencies in making anything but standard Pokemon games. Yes I know they have made a few non Pokemon games but all of those were father away from MMOs than Pokemon.

Although it would be an interesting games especially if they included elements from the anime. Like having more than 8 gyms per region and finally having a game on that chain of islands, I forget their name but it was the series where Brok was replaced by Tracy.

I'm afraid to be the person that says this topic has been done to death, but it has.
Has it? And here was me thinking I was being all original.
Whether or not it's original, it would still be a great idea. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the next step in the games, I mean how many more pokemon can you think up? People are starting to get bored, what better way to rejuvenate the series?
I'm not bothered about new Pokemon to be honest, if they made an initial one with all the ones they have already they would be fine. Even if it meant after a while releasing an expansion pack with some completely new Pokemon.

I think it would be nice, but I don't know whether the gameplay style of Pokemon would translate well to an MMO format.

My main problem is the turn based combat. In MMOs, this is not preffered. They could do what Final Fantasy 12 did, and have 'turns' based on a timer, but I'm not sure if that would work well either.

A major hurdle in Nintendo producing a Pokemon MMO is that it is primarily directed at the younger game buyers. It's notoriously hard to police an MMO for disruptive elements, and something like Pokemon would attract all kinds of greifers. Nintendo wouldn't want their squeaky clean Pokemon franchise being sullied by Barrens-esque ramblings on various viscious fluids and your-mum jokes. Their Wii online experience is demonstrative of their desire to protect the kiddies, and an MMO produced by them would most likely have similar restrictions on interaction.

Additionally, Nintendo has time and time again shown that it's understanding of how online functionality should be implemented is sorely lacking.

Pokemon should have them running in the wild on the handheld games. There's no excuse for RPGs not to take a page from EarthBound's book and eliminate random battling. This is one of the reasons I've refused to play any Pokemon game passed Crystal; because the series hasn't evolved enough.

If you have facebook, search for pokemon aps, one of them is a pokemon red/blue style mmo, basicly playing the original game but with loads of other trainers wondering around and the odd tweeks. Was in very early Alpha when i saw it last tho.

But yes, done to death topic, but at the same time so full of potential awesomeness (Much like a wii 3rd person rpg-action pokemon would be awesome)

EPIC FAIL!!! Pokemon+MMORPG= The worst of the worst! It's a JRPG and it's destroying Pokemon. Hasn't American censorship done enough damage to the series?!

I sort of agree that it would be a total fail.

However if they made it with only the original 150 Pokemon then it might have a slim chance.

I'd imagine they'd have all the different continents (games) playable with the various "150" on each one. If we're lucky the original ones would iether be first to visit or last with higher level stuff! :D

A web based one exists currently, and has for years. It's pretty crappy though, I would so buy a real one.

Nintendo doesn't want to. They want players to communicate with each other and trade their pokemon.

http://kotaku.com/5179687/why-theres-not-a-pokemon-mmo

"At this point, we're not thinking of going in that direction," says Masuda. "Trading is a core concept of Pokemon. So when you're trading, you meet with a friend and decide which one you want and which one they want. I would like to emphasize real-world communication. You don't see each other online."

A pokemon MMO would be a terrible idea! Sure it would have a few 9 year olds playing it, then they would get bored, like kids that age do, and no other age group would touch a pokemon MMO with a 50 pole. So it would be doomed to failure before it even got off the ground, if it would even get THAT far.
