Hey guys,
Anyday now my copy of pokemon white will finally arrive in the mail. I've been waiting so long to get my hands on the game but the price has failed to drop (stupid Australia prices). So thanks to Ebay it will be mine.

I have no idea what any of the new pokemon are like and what their moves are so I was wondering if any of you fellow pokemaniacs could help me? In every pokemon game you need to pick up a few pretty much mandatory pokemon. A flying type for flying, a water type for surfing and usually a ground and fire type too. I've checked out the starters and have decided to go with Snivy as my starter. So I already have grass covered. Usually I try and build up a mixed team of Fire, Water, Grass, Rock/Ground, Flying, Psychic but don't necessarily have to follow this layout

So assuming I can't trade or cheat. What are some good pokemon to catch early on in the game to setup a mixed team?

Black and White are little weird, the team you have in the end might not fit into the classic formula, Black and white have some odd type combonations. Example, for the fire type, if you didn't choose the fire starter, most people go with

Victini (fire/ psychic, only through liberty pass), Volcarona (fire/bug type) or
Litwick (Fire/ ghost)

You'll probably be forced to go with Litwick, if you don't have a liberty pass or don't feel like hatching an egg.

You'll know your starting team when you encounter them, most don't take to much travel off the beaten path to find, but if your like me, you may not like them to much and instead opt for a slightly off balance team that's much cooler.

I didn't have a flying type until I got archen (rock/ flying) then later,
Hydregion (dark/ dragon)

The standard early catch pokemon are...
Pidove, some horrible monkey of a given type, blitzle, woobat, Sandile, munna, Purrloin, lillipup.

Others feel free to add to this list.
Basically, go with what's required to beat the given gym leader, you probably wont have your preferred team until much later in the game.

Will they include pokemon from older series? If I can't find anything I like I could always fallback on them.

Older Pokemon will be available, but not until you beat the Elite 4. Ya, I had the same feelings as you (as in wanting some oldies to fall back on)

I guess we should try and quit living in the past and embrace the future.....even though some of them do look retarded. I still love you pokemon.

For some starting Pokemon I'd recommend getting a bug or grass type so you can have access to powders like sleep and such. Helps in catching other types early on in the game.

Secondly I'd say grab a Litwick (it's a Fire/Ghost-type) with the Flash Fire Ability. Not only will it have some nice stats later on but the aforementioned ability, Flash Fire, renders all fire attacks against it useless (ups the power of your own fire moves as well).

For a Rock or Ground type try getting a Roggenrola early as well. While not the best it can have some nice Def. stats after it evolves.

I'd also recommend that you get Axew cause when it evolves, boy can it deal out some pain.

If you need anything else feel free to PM me here. Folks who play the game are few and far between where I live so I like to offer advice and such when I can to other players.

I actually had to dig through my games to find the game.

Ok, a few things:
1.) TMs are REUSABLE. This means that you can teach a move as many times as you like without having to buy new ones (once you acquire it, you can use it as many times as you want).
2.) Gaining experience points is different in this game. e.g A Lvl. 10 Pokemon beating a Lvl. 15 Pokemon will gain more experience points than a Lvl. 20 Pokemon beating a Pokemon of the same level. It's not a huge set back, but the game forces you to move forward rather than stay in the same spot to train. Also, many Pokemon evolve at higher levels and previous Gens to keep that in mind.
3.) Some Pokemon are found later in the game (Post Elite Four) and the titular legendary Pokemon is available toward the END of the main story.

Okay, so here are some Pokemon that I found are great (and look cool to boot):

Grass-types: Snivy, Petilil, Cottonee
Fire-types: Reshiram, Litwick, Victini, Larvesta
Rock/Ground-types: Golett, Roggenrola, Drillbur
Electric-types: Joltic, Blitzle, Tynamo, Emolga
Water/Ice-types: Tirtouga, Tympole, Panpour, Cryogonal
Psychic/Dark-types: Sigilyph, Munna, Elbyem, Zorua
Flying-types: Pidove
Dragon-types: Axew, Deino

There are many more to choose from so you can visit

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Main_Page

for just about everything that you would want to know about the White Verson, or Pokemon in general.

When you meet them, catch and train your favorites. That's what I do, doesn't matter that I end up having a weirdo Gothic Lolita Pokemon or a terrible Pachirisu on my final team against the Elite Four, I train my favorites. Luckily most of my favorites have good stats and look cool...

The only thing I could give you is info on what I chose for my team. First off I'll say before I got to the 4th gym, I had the team that carried me to the end game. But that really happens in all pokemon games I have played, because I don't feel like getting acclimated to a new team member late in the game maybe just before the last couple of gyms to the Elite Four. Basically, I'm not a wishy-washy team picker. To tell the truth right before I got White, I looked at all the new ones since I had to pick only from them, and chose my team of six. Then eventually I had them and I wrecked everybody from that point on, not that I actually lose battles. I haven't lost a battle going through the main story of a pokemon game since the original Silver version.

But back to my point, I told myself with all the people harshly trashing the new pokemon, I was determined to see how many teams of new pokemon I could put together, that had good type sets and that I liked how they looked and handled.

I'll give you the ending names and moves known now and level now, you can look up what they come from here:

http://www.serebii.net/blackwhite/isshudex.shtml

Also I don't do nicknames, so they keep the original name. In the spoilers are my teams and front picture of each. So far, I have three great teams of new pokemon.

Braviary, Normal/Flying Lv.75

Hydreigon, Dark/Dragon Lv.75

Galvantula, Bug/Electric Lv.75

Volcarona, Bug/Fire Lv.75

I'm actually really liking a lot of the new pokemon of this generation. I still believe I still have enough in my list of likes to create at least one more team of all this gen pokemon.

I say yes to embracing this generation and the future. I really don't think the ones I have trained so far look retarded, I think they look awesome. Lastly, my all-time favorite of this generation shout out, has to go to Volcarona; it looks awesome, because it is a type spice never seen before, bug/fire, it is unique, and mine is incredibly fast and has an ungodly special attack level(well over 200).

Try to find yourself a Sigilyph. It's awesome.
I highly recommend this. It is the bane of the fighting Elite Four member, since fighting attacks only do one quarter damage because of the double strength in type.

Though his fighters, three know Stone Edge, and one knows Rock Slide, so the player using the Sigilyph strategy must have some good defense team members to put in as pinch-hitters to give time to heal Sigilyph if it gets knocked out.

The Pokemon you like with the moves you like! =)
Granted, the OP will by playing White for the first time, and won't be able to choose any favorites from the past until he beats the game.

I was lucky that the ones I liked before starting to play, even though I knew nothing about them, turned out awesome, and were easy to get early on(all before the 4th gym).

The OP was looking for guidance, on which ones are tolerable and not seen as looking stupid.

I fyou want early in game, I'd go with a scaggy. On his own, he takes out a VERY good portion of the elite four, with fighting/dark typing. He crushes Shauntel, destroys grimsley, is immune to psychic Caitlyn (though you have to be careful of her sigilyph). hell, if you carry a musharna in with you that knows an electric attack, you can pretty much take the entire E4 with just those two.

Other good ones are maractus (I know, trust me. Mine has been just desrtoying everything in her path), and the Leech electric type. especially since it has levitate ability so its immune to its only weakness and learns moves like flamethrower through TM. But you dont see them till after the fifth gym, so by then you have a blitzle. But the eel has a better stat split (I think at least).

Seismatoad are also cool because you get the water/ground combo in one.

i dontk now, really, its up to you. I wound up ditching my Pidove though after the first gym, and that was only cause I chose Oshawott, and the pidove was insurance against grass monkey if my fire wasnt up to snuff. Then I ditched the fire monkey for a darumaka anyway.

I knew I was going to be ditching my Pidove as soon as I found a Sigilyph.

I wanted to raise Braviary on my first run through, but they don't show up until very late in the game, so I trained one in my second team after I beat the Elite Four and got my first team to lv.75.

I came back to my Pidove, when training my third team.

The thing this generation did for me, is make the thought of raising an all bug team interesting. Galvantula and Volcarona are phenomenal.

My ultimate bug team based on power and favorites:

Galvantula
Volcarona
Scolipede
Butterfree
Heracross
Scizor

That would be my team if I was a bug gym leader.

I ended up using for most of the game
- Emolga
- Haxorus
- Braviory
- Samurott
- Krookodile
- Mienshao

But now that I've beaten the main game, and have access to a second DS that I can use to transfer over other pokemon, I'm working on getting rid of all but two of the above.

...
id dint even pick up a sigilyph. well, no, I lied I caught one just to say I did and to (help) complete the Dex. but I never used it, and its pretty much just sitting in a box by itself, so it knows how much I hate it. i dont care for the things, and promised myself id never use one. The only reason I dont release it is cause it pisses off the people I play pokemon with that I have a perfectly good one with the perfect nature and IV and Im not willing to give it up or use it (and its shiny too which just really pisses people off).

The only flying type I use is a swoobat, and thats cause it has the duel type the same as Sigilyph (even though its stats are worse). so far I havent want to put in the effort to raise rufflet, and I need to get around to training a dragonite on my pearl/HG to import.

Actually, I forgot about Swoobat, I actually trained my Woobat to that, and dropped it as soon as I got Sigilyph. I like Sigilyph's stats better, as well as I like its look better compared to Swoobat.

I actually have a Dragonite as part of my first play through team on Heart Gold. Spent the agonizing hours in the early game at the Johto gamecorner and gambled until I had enough tokens to get a Dratini from the prize pokemon.

I actually beat Champion Lance's three Dragonites with my Dragonite, even though my Dragonite(nevermind, must have been a Dragonair, because it evolves to Dragonite at level 55, which begs the question how Lance has his Dragonites) was only at level 46, and his were at 49, 49 and 50. Though that did have something to do with my Butterfree using sleep-powder on them as well as flash.

HG Team:
Typhlosion
Butterfree
Noctowl
Golduck
Exeggutor
Dragonite

In some respects it is a somewhat weak team, at least it has been a tough team to train, but they are on my list of favorite pokemon.

Make sure you get a Joltik/Galvantula with Compound eyes. He was my main pokemon the rest of the game. After all, who doesn't love 100% accuracy Thunders? Archeops was the second-in-command of my team. Such a beast.

Oh and the dark-type cat you can get early on and the monkey pokemon are fucking worthless. Just putting that out there.
