Okay, here's the deal: My girlfriend and I have been talking about it for a while, and now we're having a real throwdown: We've been arguing about which of us is the better pokemon trainer, and now we're going to see for real by each raising a team (Myself on the original red, and her on blue)
The rules are: No legendaries, and a Lv. cap of 55, and we have to keep our teams secret from each other
Now from what I know about her, I'm fairly certain she started with Charmander, and she hates grass, bug, and poison types, so I think there won't be any of those on her team (mind you, I'm not positive about those things, just suspicious.)

So here's where the Escapist community comes in. Guys, I need your help to come up with the ultimate team to beat her, to prove I'm the better trainer. I appriciate any help you can give me. Thanks all!

Wouldn't asking for help on an internet forum be cheating? That would mean you didn't get the idea to train your team on your own. But, oh well, I don't know much about Pokemon, but even with my limited knowledge, I can give one piece of advice, start with Squirtle. Always.

Well there is always the dirty option of taking a peek at her line up when she isnt looking and adjusting your team to match it.

you could always look at a FAQ. and see what pokemon would have the best stats at lvl 55.
Other than than that considering its the first gen.

you will want pokemon with a variety of moves.
one that can lean mutiple types for eg. a fighting. that can learn the different elemental punches( fire ice, electric)
anything that hits for high damage or. can be used as a wall. snorlax generally is good for this.

but even if you build a perfect line up. your starting pokemon vs hers could be a bad choice and affect the outcome.

Always take a diverse team into the fight, never load your "hand" with one type, because that means that if she includes just one super effective type, she's won the game.

I'd take a haunter/gengar with Hypnosis, Dream Eater (takes health from a sleeping foe, gives it to you) and Destiny bond (a last ditch attack to take down her main pokemon).

Water types are pretty obvious, but stay clear of Gyarados, because Electric does super-super effective damage (water and flying- great mix :p) You can do worse than a Vaporeon or a Poliwrath.

Flight- Pidgeot, no contest.

Take a Rapidash or an Arcanine, just in case she comes at you with a bug/grass, trying to double bluff you.

Also, a Butterfree with PoisonPowder, SleepPowder, Stun Spore and Psybeam to mess with any pokemon who you'd rather not face at full strength.

A pikachu or a Riachu is also pretty useful.

Remember, if you're serious you'll switch in and out like crazy, so if you can teach a pokemon a special effective move against a special effective type, do it.

Ok... that didn't come out that clear... Basically, imagine you're using a Fire pokemon. Your opponent switches out for a Water pokemon to kill it, and you reveal that the Fire Pokemon knows Thunder Punch, meaning it can do a decent ammount of damage off the bat.

On that note, Hitmonchan is pretty good if you teach him Icepunch, Firepunch and Thunderpunch, it covers quite a few angles whilst hitting solidly.

I second this

Best way to get the best stats, catch 3-5 of the pokemon you want all at the same level (as low as you can find them), calculate the standard deviation of the base stats and select the one that has the highest. Build them up with vitamins and supplements as early on as you can to get their stats maxed out and as powerful as that particular pokemon can possibly be.

abracadabra.. although i guess it would be a little fuck up cause you gotta trade him to promote (thats so fucking stupid... i guess it sells more copies)

blastoise with earthquake (he CAN use it and for me, he's killed the entire final 4 [5])

and the rest i kind of bullshit on my normal game

Before the battle you can buy a bunch of those items (calcium, iron, etc. the permanent ones, you dont want to be wasting time buffing in battle while she chips away at your lineup) to buff up the weaknesses of your pokemon.
Example - use a bunch of iron (def) on say kadabra, since that's what psychic pokemon are short on.

since the whole point is to get to lvl 55 and battle, blow the rest of your money on items to heal hp and status modifiers. (i hate paralyze >.<)

plus, it wouldnt be a bad idea to let your gf win
or there's that, maybe get lucky later ;P

EDIT: if you have a spare gameboy and pokemon red/blue, you can trade yourself early in the game and give yourself all three starting pokemon, but she might see that as cheating.
I always wanted to try it anyways lol

If she started with Charmander then she will probably have an electric Pokemon to counter your water types (I would also say grass but you said she doesn't use them)so make sure you bring along a counter for that.

Your starter should be Bulbasaur because Venusaur can learn Toxic.(toxic poisoning combined with leech seed on a target will increase the damage dealt from both)

If you're able to get an Alakazam, use it because it's special is huge and psychic types have no weakness in the first game.(well, bug attacks, but they're the weakest in the game)

Persian would also be a good choice, it is fast can learn Bubblebeam, Thunder(bolt) and it learns Screech and Slash.

If you want to be cheap, lower a pokemon's speed, use toxic, leech seed and send in a fast pokemon with wrap, it stops the target pokemon from doing anything while taking a lot of damage.

No destiny Bond in Red/Blue, and ghost is good unless there's a psychic on the other team.(or a normal)

IIRC no pokemon has 2 types in red/blue, so gyarados would only have the normal weakness to lightning.

A butterfree is nice, but dies when anything with a fire or psychic attack looks at it. Having the pokemon all bring a special ability is better.(e.g. pikachu with thunder wave)

I would recommend a Gengar, hypnosis is useful, and even better when coupled with dream eater.
If you can't do the whole trade thing, Haunter is still great.

Go with Gengar, woo for Ghost pokemon! (although again I think you need to trade to get it, which would suck...) Other than that, try to have a little variety, incase your g/f decides to throw in some grass bug and poison types in her lineup just to throw you off...

You're playing first-gen.

PSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHICPSYCHIC

That is all.

Also, following other people's advice on how to do something is not skill or intuition or what would make you a better trainer...Also, misleading topic title.

Anyway, I laughed and enjoyed it, and I hope your girlfriend wins.

There are double-types in Red/Blue/Yellow. Butterfree itself is bug/flying, Beedrill is Bug/Poison. Charizard is Fire/Flying. and Gyarados IS Water/Flying. Heck, Venasaur is Grass/Poison.
