Pokemon, second in command

by second in command, i mean the pokemon you level with your starter so that you have an excellent chance of winning battles. i never did this before pokemon XD. i caught a moderately lv. zubat. well my espion fainted and all i had left was that zubat. and with one lucky hit, it won. since then, whenever i start a new game, i always keep a second in command. usually its the first flying type i find so it can learn fly.

so my question is, do you do this and what pokemon do you use for this position?

Silver: Magikarp(Gyarados)
Emerald: Gardevoir

Usually the early flying pokemon; Pidgey, Starly, Tailow/Wingull, etc.

I traded over a level 100 Sazandora into my current playthrough just in case things get really hairy, so that.
Otherwise, usually the first Pokemon I encounter.

Usually, my second in command is a Beedrill (normally play FR/LG or HG/SS)

i've only played Blue and i've done it so many times i keep mine at roughly the same and can usually without too much trouble

Whatever the main legendary of the game is before that its usually the strongest pokemon I've caught up to that point

first flying type for me too, it seems to be the most logical one

I level up all of my pokemon evenly, sometimes making the starter a few levels higher. I have not found anyone else who does this.

I usually level an electric pokémon with my starter. In Platinum it was Shinx and in HeartGold it was Mareep.

I don't remember what I levelled with my starter for Saphire, Gold or Red though, too long ago to remember >.<

I am one of these crazy people that use all 6 slots. And always keep them the same level, usually over levelled as well.

For Red - Ekans
For Blue - Sandshrew

Both caught in the grassy area after Mt.Moon actually.
Any pokemon before that were Yaaawn.

Mankey was a welcome edition in Pokemon Yellow though but was replaced when I caught my six favourite!

I always level my pokemon up evenly. For example, I hate having a level 20 and a level 17. They both need to be level 20. Though, I do usually have a second command as my fallback pokemon.

Heartgold it was Ampharos
Emerald it is Ralts(currently in a playthrough)
Usually in FireRed my second in command is Pidgeot
Platinum it was Luxray

More than likely in Black it'll be Blitzle.

Depends on the game. In Red/Blue/FireRed/LeafGreen it usually is Starmie, unless I pick Squirtle, in which it would most likely be Growlithe.

In Gold/Silver/HG/SS it usually is Ampharos.

In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald it was Rhydon.

In Diamond/Pearl/Platinum it was Magmortar.
