I think you should go back and play the old games first. You have in fact missed out on quite a bit, but I don't think it will ruin your experience if you choose to skip straight to diamond and pearl. I just think the gameboy games like Silver and Blue and Emerald are the most fun.

Not to hate(I own every pokemon game since red/blue) but could we stop with the nostalgia goggles and give me a reason why you actually prefer older versions? is it because you can't run and have to wait 7 hours for a move to be executed in terrible graphics? or do you just enjoy retarded looking charizards to much >.>

I'm just saying, these games get upgraded for 2 reasons;

To make money and
To better the experience you get from it.

I'm not saying you're opinion is wrong, I'm just tired of all the people saying 'oh older one was better cuz they were'(yes we get it you were there from the start like 6 billion other people where give it a rest already)

I played the originals as well. And I am never going back. After all the improvements throughout the series (RUNNING SHOES!) its just incredible how crappy the originals are. And I don't want to hear "this generations pokemon look worse!" They don't. Every generetion had ass pokemon. Don't make me bring up Mr. Mime, Jynx, and Eggsecutor. Plus your not a kid anymore, your seeing things through adult eyes, which usually regard kid-looking stuff as retarded looking.

Pokemon is a fantastic franchise but I'm pretty biased as they nabbed me during the first generation. If you want to get into the games, I'd recommend HeartGold/Soulsilver over Diamond/Pearl as I think they represent the franchise better. Plus, it gives you a look at what second generation Pokemon felt like with all the graphical advantages of 4th gen.

I won't deny that the gameplay improved dramatically during 3rd gen but I still love 1st and 2nd the best. Nostalgia has the ability to make one ignore how grindtastic the original games were.

I have never really been into hand held gaming, at least for the past decade, but I felt like I should get back into it so a few weeks ago I bought a Nintendo DSi and I have been having fun with it. I have been thinking about getting Pokemon Diamond and Pearl however I think that I have missed out for ten years on additions of new monsters, trainers, or even characters that you play as. So I ask you readers of this thread have I missed out on too much or can I still jump on the band wagon and get the idea.

I'd suggest Platinum. I think it's supposed to have more than the other 2.

Also about the whole nostalgia view I'm still saying the latest ones are better and they will keep getting better untill they drop the ball in the near future when all the games are completely 3d ^^

Whatever you do though don't do this. I'm not saying new = bad, what I'm saying is that with every generation they release the initial 2 then another one that's got all the stuff from both, minus a few pokemon here and there, plus all new stuff. If you wait for the new ones, wait for Gray or whatever the hell they'll have this time around.

Somewhere I have a Mew card with a shiny silvery background, which I think is supposed to be good. Dunno if its worth much but I remember being ecstatic when I got it.

Up until about a year ago I had an original edition Raigeki of Yugioh, which I gave away to some kid. Worth a good chunk of cash <_<. *Punches self*

I say Heart Gold, or if you want an idea of what to expect there are a few good LPs of it out although most are crap.

To all who have said that Red/Blue were the best of them all: I played the original red and blue when they first came out. I'd take HG/SS over them any day. Seriously, there is absolutely nothing those games have that the new ones don't, except a profound sense of "I-was-here-first" elitism. I mean, Red and Blue were fantastic in their time, but the new games are the exact same things, just more refined and expanded.

OT: I'd agree with what seems to be the common opinion, go with HG/SS. I won't tout the "Silver/Gold were the best in the series" card, I'd just say that they have more value as they have two regions instead of one, and a whole bunch more pokemon and things to do on the side.

Put it this way, Halo 1 was the best of the series, and was an awesome game. The other ones didn't have that WOW factor because they were more of the same. Pokemon is the epitome of that problem. Pokemon has not changed the basic formula in over 15 games. That's screwed up. It is very possible to make a Pokemon game where you play a trainer who doesn't have to go to 8 different gyms, but they are too scared to change now.

It sticks to its core mechanic and does it well, and it's really a damn if you do/don't situation. Besides, things likes Ruby, Gold, Platinum, etc, aren't the only Pokemon games. There are plenty off-shoot games like Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, and Stadium/Colosseum.

There's a million other reasons why the first two games are better. First and foremost, BALANCE.

Psychic Pokemon in generation one. Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. No special split, vast movepool, decent to high speed, and one weakness from the most underdeveloped typing til DPPt. Generation four also solved the problem of stat distribution crippling Pokemon that weren't offensive with their STAB. Sneasel was useless, and the only place where it saw use was as a banned Pokemon card.

Sure the kids all scream when there's a hundred new stupid creatures, but that takes some of the best old creatures and makes them lame.

Agreed to an extent. Generation one evolutions in generation four are terrible. However, the rest came out pretty well, particularly generation two evo's.

I actually stopped catching Pokemon in the new ones because it got to be pointless. The phrase "Gotta Catch Em All" actually meant something when I was little; I wanted all of the Pokemon in my pokedex. If you had Red, you only needed one friend with Blue and you could have a full pokedex. The allure of potentially having a 100 percent complete game made me continue to play. I played in tournaments where we all had full pokedex's and legit raised 100's who were maxed out in stats and that was incredible to see. The strategy involved was awesome, and back then we were all just kids.

That's why there is a national/regional Pokedex now. Collecting is still part of the game, if you're willing to go for the challenge. For the most part, most of the Pokemon are in the console generation, and pretty much behave the same way as back then with exclusives. Legit raised 100's during the Red and Blue saga make me laugh considering the widely known duplication glitch in those games that anyone could do, but it's still respectable.

Now the game has barely changed, and the additions are all so minute and useless, that it is not fun. Oh wow, my Pokemon can be happy. That's dumb. Oh wow, it affects the game. That's insanely stupid. Oh wow, I can GIVE MY POKEMON HAIRCUTS?!?!? That speaks for itself. The berries are a waste of time. The extra Pokeball's aren't worth the effort...

Certain berries are used in competitive battling or contests. Contests were introduced to add something else to do. Same thing with the Battle Frontier. Happiness was introduced to give new methods of evolution. Same for night/day. Breeding too, besides to breed.

There was literally nothing to do after beating the Elite Four in generation one besides capturing Mewtwo.

All I want is a Pokemon game, preferably in 3D, where you're Dad is missing or something. Then your brother/mom gets kidnapped. Then you go and fight bad guys the whole time with your Pokemon and do SOMETHING other than gyms. (Oh and at the end the leader of the bad guys is your dad, like Giovanni should have been.)

Nothing wrong with that. So far, the special manga is the darkest Pokemon gets.

Pokemon Kanto (Red and Blue) is the only generation I play anymore. I never did the bandwagon thing, but I've always loved the glitches in those games. Pity there's not as much of that in the newer ones.

Now there are literal PokeGods that control time and crap and its ridiculous that they can lose to other pokemon. I meant balance in the sense that, yeah some pokemon were the best, but they were few and far between.

From a logical perspective, yes. Pokemon with special attributes like control over dreams, time, or whatever the hell, should have immense power over something like, say, Magikarp. However, I don't think it should ever guarantee absolute victory. If anything, that's not balance, speaking from a competitive perspective. However, there is enough stat totals/good distribution to give them an edge over other Pokemon, or even that ensured victory 1 vs 1.
Realism shouldn't account for an ensured loss because my opponent is using Darkrai, imo. The anime can stick their feet into the whole "unbeatable" legendaries route for all I care though.

It's actually a little known fact (actually you probably know this) that rare candy leveled pokemon are weaker, even if you go nuts with stat ups. But if you level them and THEN give them stat ups, they become the best they can be.

That's due to effort values, which were acquired differently back then. I'm sure you know what they are, but maybe not this.

You still have to battle Pokemon to gain points, but it can be calculated and added to your Pokemon without level-up. That said, you still need to mercilessly kill Pokemon like you would do leveling to show for it, but there is no harm in using candies.



Anyway, more of topic to the OP I never answered.
Personally, I think HGSS are great remakes. Pokemon is easy to jump into because it's that accessible. I'd personally recommend HGSS, especially if you're an old time Gold/Silver fan, but you can jump in 6 years down the road and not feel any different.
If want something fresh, Black and White won't be released til next year in the States. So, perhaps Platinum? Sinnoh is interesting enough and has the best HM slave.
