in games like doom & half life, you can have as many weapons as you want, but in games like COD/Halo, you can only have 2 weapons at a time. do you prefer the the Doom/half life system, or the COD/halo system. And for added discussion, do you prefer having to choose a grenade to throw it, or being the grenade throw mapped to a button. Personally I prefer all weapons and having grenades mapped to a button.

It makes more sense to me that you would be able to carry at least three weapons. I much prefer the doom/half-life system because it makes the gameplay a bit more interesting when you have a lot of guns to choose from, and in doom/half life games there seems to be an incentive at times to use one gun over another to conserve ammo - unlike in Halo where I never seem to run out.

All weapons. Yep. All weapons. I know that it's not "realistic" to have all weapons, and that it can make the game too easy or just plain break a game at certain points, but having all types of weapons is preferable to only having two. For instance - say there's a weapon I really like to use, but of which ammo is scarce. I want to hang on to that weapon in case I come across the appropriate ammo later in the game.

Then again, in most games it doesn't matter all that much - I mean, take COD for instance - the different guns in those games don't make much of a difference in the Singleplayer. Also, well designed games will give the player the appropriate ammo/weapon at the appropriate time. In Killzone 2 for instance, you can only carry one weapon type (that's not your pistol) - but any time you need a rocket launcher, one is nearby. Or in a COD level where you go up against snipers, they'll usually provide a sniper rifle for you to use if you want.

Really depends on the game type, something like CoD can't use all weapon at once because there are 50million variations to every gun and you would be scrolling for days to find the one you want.
Then Counter Strike also can't have more weapons because it's all about moderation and ammo scarcity, you do one load-up and then you need to get through the match with that.

But I prefer the Doom/HL loadouts, you get a wide variety of weapons and you choose the right tool for the right job.
Also prefer having grenades as an extra weapon option, it adds that little bit of danger when using them so you can't just spam people with grenades at your leisure.

I'm a little in the middle road.

For multi player 2 weapons seems to be a game balance thing. At least so far as controllers compared to kb/mouse.

However for single player I'm much more in line with say a dead space or borderlands style. 4 weapons lets you have situational weapons without having to really limit to what you can carry.

I like two weapons, it's easier to manage and to switch weapons out, and makes me think of the pros and cons of each weapons.

Depends on if I'm playing on a console or on the PC.

PC, I can swap many weapons quickly. Console, I can't, so two is perfect.

Thats the reason they did the two weapon thing anyway. Controllers don't have ten buttons mapped to an individual weapon and no one wants to cycle a menu mid-battle to find the weapon they want to use.

All weapons may not be ideal but it is a sight better than taking a sniper build that can only carry a sniper rifle and a pistol for when it gets up close and hairy. A sniper is a specialist but they are still a part of the frontline fighting force and carry standard weapons for daily use.

Hmm...I do quite like the 2 weapon system for more realistic type games (except Killzone 2, only 1 primary and a pistol!) but the have your entire arsenal at once is good for certain games as well.

I liked Borderlands' system. 4 weapon slots. IMO, that's low enough that you can't just carry an armory around on your back, but high enough that you can specialize while still having an all-purpose weapon or 2.

Not that it limited you TOO much, as your actual inventory was much larger and you could just swap weapons out through that.

I will choose the non-existent Other. Borderlands has taught me that having several weapons that can be switched around and a inter-dimensional space to hold your gear works well together. Of course, that's only on Single Player. Multi-Player games like Halo or Team Fortress 2 are better off at 2 and 3 weapons respectively.

2 weapons. Makes you think about which ones you'll need in the upcoming level(s). Adds a tiny bit of strategy to the game.

I oddly like Killzone's way of it. One primary, a pistol, a knife and a couple of pineapples. Because in real-life, carrying two rifles or launchers would kill your back, along with all your kit.

Hailing from that long forgotten world known as UT99 I have to say that I need all my tools at my disposal if I want to be operating at peak efficiency. I like games like unreal championship 2 and halo and whatnot that limit your weapon loadout but there's just something about having a tool for every situation in your bag of tricks that really elevates a game to the next level for me (at least for multiplayer).

2. Or maybe 3 - 2 and a pistol, or similar. And I much prefer grenades on a shoulder button, as no-one would use them otherwise.

Having all the weapons doesn't suit a console game so well, and certainly doesn't suit modern multiplayer ideals. Given that people try to go for the decent weapons the second they spawn, giving them the option to grab all the good weapons at once can't be a good thing.
As a system, it harks back to the days where one or 2 weapons were grossly overpowered, and half the strategy of any game was to prevent your opponents grabbing the power weapon.
With greater weapon balance and the increasing use of the class system in games, 2 weapons seems to win out every time.
