2007, as many will no doubt know, was hailed as the best year for gaming yet... with more AAA titles than you can think of, like Halo 3, Bioshock, The Orange Box, Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and many, many more, 2007 was truly an epic year for gaming.

when 2008 started, things looked even more promising - Sony was proudly announcing 08 as "the year of the PS3", and many big name titles looked to be released, such as Spore, MGS4, and, possibly most importantly, the first proper Grand Theft Auto sequel in many years, as well as many other games which promised to be brilliant.

now that we're reaching the end of 2008, what does everyone think? as we know, some of the titles promising to be amazing flopped in epic grandure that even surpassed the amazingness that the games promised to deliver, notably Spore. however, 2007 also had its share of failures, such as Lair. on top of that, Grand Theft Auto IV has been almost universally critically acclaimed (the ONLY negative review i've seen so far is by Yahtzee, and well, thats Yahtzee), and most other titles proved to be very good.

personally, i think 2007 was a better year, probably for one very good reason: Nintendo.

what happened to them??? 2006 they saw brilliances like Zelda, 2007 with Mario, but 2008? Animal Crossing? sure, Super Smash Brothers was received very well, but the sheer amount of shovel ware that has been released for the Wii + DS... they have proven to be the bain of hardcore video gamers.

then again, im a PS3 owner, and i think that Sony semi-achieved on their goal of "the year of the PS3!", with some great exclusive content like MGS4, LBP, Valkyria Chronicles (the new Phychonauts/Okami), and the console actually doing quite well, at least in Japan and Europe.

so, whats everyone elses opinion?

Maybe if there were enough differences in the way games were made in 2008 as opposed to 2007...

Just wait a bit. Whenever I make a thread, I usually leave and come back an hour later, by that time a lot of people will have posted.

I can't really decide on this 2008 vs. 2007. Most of the games of 2007 lasted about 6 hours campaign wise though 2008's selection seems to have the longer games. 2007 was a revolutionary year for gaming.

We got a new president! It won't change anything but yeah! New president!

Anyway... I think that 2008 was good just because World of Goo proved that games without copy protection could sell just fine. Even if it was pirated en masse as a result of this, it was still successful. Also proved that the PC is still one of the best environments for new games, though one might argue that about Cave Story. Not sure where to place that game though, since it's been free from the beginning.

I think that they were both excellent years, but 2007 comes up on top by just a little bit. There was more innovation and new ideas coming to fruition in 2008, but the execution in some of those cases left a little to be desired.

I actually thought this year was better, there was more of a balance between shooters and games that were not shooters for both the 360 and PS3. I actually found stuff to play that was not a straight up shooter which was a marked improvement. There was Mirror's Edge, Dead Space (I didn't like the demo at all. But I won't say it'ss a bad game. If/when I upgrade my gpu I may pick it up.), Tales of Vesperia, Disgaea 3(Most grindtastic game I have ever played.), Fallout 3, (This is what Bethesda should have made in the first place since the controls actually lend themselves to guns.) and of course MGS 4.

Fable 2 and Fallout 3 vs. Halo 3 and Bioshock?

I don't care, I still get some nice games out of the need to please us.

I'm sorry, Sins of a Solar Empire (released in February 2008) is what proved that no-DRM games can sell fine. It got to #2 on the UK and USA gaming sales charts, and they do not include the internet (direct download), which accounted for most of SoaSE's total sales.

Not bad for a game developed by relative nobodies and published by a company better known for allowing people to make Windows XP look less like shit [http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/].

I'd still say that World of Goo is considerably more notable. Mostly in that it's a considerably better game. Also the fact that it's an indie game developed by two people. It's fairly unique in many aspects. But if you want to argue about relative "firsts" we can probably do that all day.

Valid argument with notability, at least with the development team (I was aware that WOG was developed by two people, and have even been in contact with Mr Gabler about the soundtrack), but it didn't really prove that DRM games can sell fine if the numbers are true. I tend to consider selling fine as not having 90% of the copies pirated =/

As for it being a "considerably better game" that depends on personal taste in my honest opinion. I enjoy them both, but that is not to say you would.

Judging by the Metacritic [http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/sinsofasolarempire] scores [http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/worldofgoo?q=world%20of%20goo] they are at least objectively as good as each other in their fields (for PC, no point comparing the Wii version of WOG as SoaSE has no counterpart).
