Poll: 3DS or PS VITA

It sounds like you're into JRPGs, which does indeed make this a hard call.

Vita has recently started getting a ton of JRPGs, like Dangan Ronpa, Conception II (though this one is also on 3ds) and Deception IV, so my vita collection has exploded recently.

On the other hand, the 3ds has the masterful Shin Megami Tensei IV, and a larger library all around.


I play the hell out of both consoles, and while currently I play the Vita considerably more, that's changed many times over the past few years. Flip a coin, OP XD

Dangan Ronpa is a visual novel, not a JRPG. Just a minor quibble.

Personally I own both, and I'd say the Vita inches ahead for especially with the existence of PS+, which might not be worth it if you just have a Vita, but its nice if you own any of the other Sony devices.

People keep saying that the 3DS has more games, but that depends on the region.
I remember buying the 3DS because of all the games, but there's literally nothing were I live(Norway).
So unless you're a citizen of the glorious United States I would recommend getting the vita for the sheer amount of games from all generations you can get.

Get a Vita if you live anywhere else than America.

Owner of both and quite honestly, my 3DS is currently hidden somewhere in a dark corner while my Vita has been getting tons of playtime, the 3DS is a fantastic system by all means, its got a fantastic amount of great exclusives but I just find it so severely lacking in everything else. Only reason I'd personally recommend it is if you truly, truly love the exclusive franchises on it.

The Vita just looks and plays so much better for me, the second analog stick is a godsend and the things some of the developers already did with its hardware is pretty darn impressive, like how utterly huge Gravity Rush's world is for a portable game or how Killzone Mercenary offers a surprisingly great console shooter experience. The ever growing amount of indie games combined with its gigantic backlog of PS1\PSP classics and ports will also ensure that you'll always have something to play. That remote play functionality with the PS4 is also bananas, and it works as a second remote too saving you some money in the long run (although an actual second remote is better, I'll admit).

Sorry if this sounds so one sided, ultimately the best I can recommend you do is hit up Metacritic, check out the top games for both (and delve a bit into the games a-z list there) and just chalk up the total amount of games you'd absolutely love to play on both devices and compare the numbers, the one with the most games you'd love to play being the obvious choice here.

And so on. I've had the system for 4 months now, been using it every day while on transit to school. So far just about every game I've played has been great (minus Wipeout, maybe most racing games just aren't for me but I've been finding it really dry). A lot of them I'll probably be replaying at some point too

I was initially worried about having too few games to warrant the purchase of the device, but those worries have been pretty much dispelled now. There's more games I want than I have time to play, so I'll have plenty of use for it for quite a while. Not to mention that by the looks of it they're releasing a lot of good games for the Vita this year. Keeping a particular eye on Phantasy Star Nova, hoping that it'll be the one to climb out of the rut that's sega's been digging since Phantasy Star Universe

Your interest in jrpgs makes this a hard one. One of my big knocks against the 3ds for me is that the only games it has that I want are jrpgs where the vita has a broader selection. I said fuck it and voted vita because it doesn't get enough respect, plus it has a bunch of jrpgs. I think you should take a close look at the list of games out and coming to each system

Also remember that several of indi devs have said making a game for the psvita is easy. The guy who made Retro City Rampage said was as easy as making a pc game. As such, the indi scene on the vita is great. Though many of the indi titles also come to Android and can be gotten cheaply through humble bumbles, but there isn't exactly a good and simple Android handheld with a gamepad (in my ever so humble opinion).

And while the vita's Achilles heel is the damn proprietary memory cards, they sort of pay for themselves with a ps+ subscription. You can download games off ps+ while they're available but you can keep them until you uninstall them. So long as you have room on your memory card, you can just keep your monthly ps+ games. I bought the 32gb card when it came out and haven't had to part with any of my games yet. I do have an ever growing backlog though. And if it matters, virtually all of the vita's games are on the store which can't be said for the 3ds. Since its a portable console, I don't want to bother carrying around game cards

I have to throw my vote in with the Vita as well. I don't have a 3DS but my brother in law does. Both systems are good, though we both agree the Vita is the technologically better system. Vita has been pumping out games lately, though the 3DS is still ahead when it comes to desirable exclusive games in my opinion. However, with the PS backlog of games available through PSN (even moreso if you sign up for PS+) there are hundreds of games to choose from, many of which are fantastic. I've actually been playing my Vita more than either my PS3 or PS4 as of late, though a lot of that has to do with my wife and kids monopolizing the TV and PS4 for Netflix.

If you are thinking of investing in a PS4 in the future anyway, I'd suggest going with the Vita as it is a wonderful companion piece for the console, is an excellent piece of tech in its own right, and seems to be getting some attention from developers at last.

Actually, as long as you "purchase" the game through PS+, you can download it whenever you want as long as you are still subscribed. I have grabbed many games when they become available but haven't downloaded them right away, and just do so as I finish games and can then delete them off my 8 GB card. Works great.

Well depends, right now there isn't much 3ds games on the horizon while Vita rpgs are getting announced left and right for western releases (Yay freedom wars!)

I've been eyeing that game since it was first announced.
It seems developers are getting more confident with localisation. I mean, Danganronpa, Oreshika, Conception, Neptunia PP... all niche games.

More likely they are figuring out Little they really need to spend on the localization and not being super greedy about "This won't sell enough to make the profits we're looking for." Some money is better then none and when you have a TON of titles you can bring over even if it's just digital damn it do it.

Anyway still saying vita, I haven't touched my 3DS since bravely default and my time with pokemon ended after The first Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Sliver. Even damn animal crossing I finished my life time goal I'll never get this for it in like a month >.<.

Hear, hear. I also notice some are testing the water with digital-only releases. (Project Diva F and the upcoming Swordart Online). Not a big fan of digital release, but the more the merrier.

Vita is more exciting to me too. I haven't touched my 3DS aside from occasional matches of Inazuma Eleven. Upcoming 3DS games seem lackluster to me except for Persona Q.
