Would the single player campaign of hardcore shooter titles like Gears of War, Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefiled or whatever be better if their main character was a mad scientist or a mechasamurai or a gorilla genie or this guy http://www.itswickedfun.net/images/nm006.jpg?

It might be but I think you would get a lot of people complaing about realism. You might think its awesome while some people would just go back to playing what ever colorless game they were playing cause its more realistic. Some people are just really picky.

For me, since I don't play shooters, I'm just applying it to what ever other sort of game I do play.

I'd love for the industry to get over its fixation on "realism." Were Super Mario Bros or The Legend of Zelda realistic? No. And they were great.

Not saying things should always be the way there were in the 8-bit glory days, but this every-game-and-its-brother featuring "earth-tones/loads of bloom/grim protagonist" has long overstayed its welcome in the spotlight.

They would have to change much more of the game to be good besides just changing the character from Private McLucky to M Scientist MD, it would still be the same game, except a bit more confusing, they would have to change the voice acting, dialogue, aesthetic, narrative, etc. for it to work with the new character and then it'll be a very different game though one I could get behind of if it's good :D

No. Even if you like the character if the story is stupid that character isn't going to pull everything else out of the fire.

I think a few of you are missing the point- it's not about choosing between a wacky character or a stronger story, it's choosing between a wacky character or a serious character.

Story isn't even part of the equation.

I don't know, the figure seems just a little too . . . . . .tame. :)

Maybe we need a FPS using something like the Elder Things or Mi-Go warring across the cosmos?

It might be fun if you're eight years old.

What campaigns need is to actually be developed, instead of being companions to multiplayer. In fact, it would be great if CoD turned itself into a TF2 like MMO, with large expansions/updates every year like the games themselves are doing now, and then the developers can focus on single player and bring it back to the good old days of 2 and 4.

Come now. I hope you're not suggesting that video game protagonists are almost all banal stereotypes endlessly reinforcing infantile masculine ideals.

Would they be better? Depends. Characters are important to any story and any story can be interesting.

Certainly the more aspects a character has, the more memorable he would be. But 'better' is not a guarantee.

When devs start spending more than $00.25 on story and character design, I would be a little more hopeful.

That's not the point at all.

I WANT a "realistic" shooter. I am not saying I think everything is brown and grey, but I really want one.

I just don't like the MW approach, SOCOM games are sub-par, battlefield is still too MW for me.

If I wanted a unrealistic shooter I have the new Serious Sam, I could fire up some Quake, play a few rounds of War§ow, get around to complete SiN Episodes: Emergence, etc.

You pretty much described Timesplitters.

So if you want to play a wacky FPS, with wacky characters, go play Timesplitters, and your wackyness with be fulfilled, especially when you are playing as a gingerbread man gunning down small monkeys in Future Perfect.
