I'm kinda with the side that says we shouldn't give such an ordinary human condition a name and pump kids full of drugs.

It is arguable whether or not ADD/ADHD really exist, as someone previously diagnosed with ADD, I personally don't believe it's a real condition... But if, IF it is a real condition, I would still stand by my belief that the vasy majority of people diagnosed ADD/ADHD don't truly have it.

ADD is the '90s way of saying a child is acting like a child would without proper parental control and/or discipline, or one which is bored shitless.

School is boring. Homework, chores, church, and to some people, sports are all BORING. A bored child OR adult, is not going to pay much attention, and some pharmacists decided to cash in on this simple fact and claim it's a mental disorder. If thinking redundant math problems are boring is a mental disorder, then I'm batshit insane.
So true.

*Hops onto the Khell and Larenxis "Not a big deal" bandwagon*

Yeah, I think it's mostly just misdiagnosed. I've seen people who could legitimately claim to have it, that is, they get pretty hyper and it's hard to keep their attention, but then I've know people for years only to find out they have a disease which I've never seen them exhibit the symptoms of.

I agree with Khell on most cases of ADD. I know a lot of people who are wrongly diagnosed with ADD. I believe that I am one of the few people that actually has ADD, it's hard to focus on things, even when it's something I really wanna be doing. It's why I have 6 books half read and 4 unfinished games.

i don't think it's a legitimate disease so much as "your child is a squirrel here are some placebos" way of looking at kids who are bored.

i qualify for several things add because you have to have a valid fight to keep my attention, ocd because i arrange things when i'm bored, autism because i'm not a gayly dancing social butterfly.

it can be simple, or a bit more dedicated to making you look like a odd-ball.

Psychology is becoming more and more of a joke. I still have respect for the field (My girlfriend is in psychology, so I have to) but so many recent disorders are just ways of making ordinary mental differences seem like flaws. ADD/ADHD is the worst offender, as the "affliction" and corresponding medications have become ways to say "I'm not a lousy parent, my child has a disorder."

EDIT: I'm not saying it doesn't exist, by the way. I'm saying that it's severely over-diagnosed.

Agreed, drugs are bad, bad, bad, even when they're meant to make children "normal"

i agree.

a friend of mine works at a school for true ADD/ADHD kids. there, when the kids have an episode they become hyperactive and sometimes violent often throwing things. then my friend has to grab the kid by the wrists and pin him to the wall until he simmers down.

i say anything short of having to go to that school is bullshit.

ADD and ADHD exhist. They are short for, "Parents who refuse to properly discipline their children."
meh, like i was saying, when the condition is real it is blatantly obvious and a PHD isn't needed to notice it.

I wouldn't say discipline is the issue, but I'm a real hippie when it comes to children. The school BallPtPenTheif mentioned seems like the worst place for a child like that to be in.
