I have this little side project HL2 mod of mine that I have started, and I want to know what you guys think of my idea.
This is not advertising my mod. I will not give a name, nor when (if ever) it will be released, or where you will be able to get it.
/disclaimer

The game begins with a black screen, and a voice starts to talk. It states that the world has ended. After the speech finishes, you find yourself in a small room, and a bright flash blinds you. You then find that your door has dissolved, and you are free to go. As you walk through a small village (this mod is set in Scotland or England BTW) the narrator talks about people and places, like a scene where you walk into an apartment and the narrator talks about the family that lived there. After you make your way through town, you travel up a small mountain, and then the game will probably end when you reach the summit.
But there will be no combat, or enemies. Everyone will have just simply vanished, you are the last man (or woman) alive. It will just be walking.
I think the thing you can most compare it to is the mod, "Dear Ester". But I plan on the maps to be better done, since they will be a big part of the mod.

EDIT- I forgot to mention, that as the player get farther into the game, the world actually starts to crumble, so that entire swaths of land disappear, and the player has to either jump across the gaps, or to find alternate ways around. So there would be an element of (easy) platforming to break up the just walking parts.

So, what do you think, my fellow Escapists? be sure to vote and leave your comments and suggestions.

I am on the fence until I know more about it. Just walking? That would not hold my interest for long unless I can go into buildings and find traces of humanity like pictures. Not just a city where there is no one. Elaborate more, would you kindly?

Yes, you could explore the village and find pictures and other artifacts of humanity. It would be free form to a point, except all paths lead to the same place, the summit of the mountain.
And the narrator talks about the inhabitants, their lives, what they were doing right before the world ended.

So it's an atmospheric, emotional tale of the end of the world and the enjoyable lives, full of promise and happiness, that have all been ended in an instant; lives of men, women, old people, toddlers, all people who were looking forward to tomorrow, all of them dead...

Sounds good if done well. And I mean seriously well, I'm talking years of development here.

So it'd be the modern equivalent of a text based adventure? Interesting idea, you'll need some seriously deep storytelling to make it work though.

That just sounds a lot like an interactive "Life After People". It wouldn't be fun, as it would basically be a movie with the players expecting more things to do.

In essence, it would be the "cutscenes" from Assassin's Creed. Without the "You're in a cutscene, you're not in control" mentality, players would just get bored waiting for it to end.

In the end, you're better off by making an animated movie.

Well I'm now downloading Dear Esther.

I played a Blind Mans Monk mod not too long ago where the whole game was done in sound, and you had to follow the instructions on where to go and do the tasks just with sound. Was awesome with headphones on sat in the dark being blind.

Sounds interesting, but I wouldn't pick it up spontaneously, I'd have to have someone say it's good before I downloaded it.

I totally understand that, I have fast internet so I download about any mod that sounds like it might be even remotely good. But Dear Ester is one of my favorite mods, it is just walking, you play it to listen to the story, not much more. But I really enjoyed it nevertheless. It was a welcome break from all the zombie mods that seem to populate the modding circuit. But if you want combat, I suggest MINERVA.
