Before I begin, I checked the other threads about the game and didn't find my answer, if any Mods would like to merge this with another thread it would be completely understandable.

My question is do I need to have played Mass Effect, to play Mass Effect 2? It is going to be released in about an hour here in the MidWest and from what I've heard the developers have done their best to fix some of the control issues I had that prevented me from getting into the 1st installment (namely having to upgrade my guns to hit what I was aiming at, even though my reticle was dead center on the enemy).

you don't NEED to have.

However, if you did play ME1, and import your save you get some bonuses..

Depending on your level, alignment, and cash, you get different bonuses when importing saves.

However, the game is designed to be able to be picked up by anyone, even if they never played ME1

Well it certainly helps if you played the first game, bu you don't need to play it. The biggest problem with jumping into ME2 and not playing the first is the same problem with ANY sequel, you're dropped in expecting to know all this back story and whatnot and you'll be confused with half the crap thats going on. More often than not. It's not a good thing to jump right into the middle of a series.

As its been said, the developers claim it should be a pick up and play for every one

You dont need to, but if you want the full story, and the feel of the Mass Effect world, i would play the first, if you want an easy easy mode on that game, play as the Solider.

It's not absolutely mandatory, but I heard in almost every review I read that much of the impact of the story is lost if you haven't played the first. If you can beat it before tomorrow, then play it.

Although all the return-of-the-original-cast moments and character/plot progression won't be quite nearly as epic.

Play the first one.

The game is 90% story, 10% combat... it's too much exposition to miss out on and you won't get the full experience.

The only reason I said you have to play the first one because you are doing a dis-service to yourself if you don't play it. If you want to play the 2nd you might as well play the first because its one of the best games of late.

No, you don't. Importing a save with a high level character would give you some starting bonuses, but not that much. The decisions that carry over from the first game can be made by brand new characters early in the game. I have played through the original Mass Effect at least a half dozen times, but I haven't kept any saves and will be starting a new character myself.

However, from what I heard the game reffers to the first one a fair bit so I'd suggest at least reading up a bit on the plot, characters and major sidequests from the first game. That way you'll know what's going on and be able to enjoy the game to the fullest (instead of scratching your head in confusion.

And you really should play the first game at some point, it's really good.

I'm kinda having the same problem as the OP. I've played the first game and all, but for the Xbox. I really want to buy the next for the PC, but if I did that I wouldn't be able to carry over my old saves. I'm not really concerned about cash and stat bonuses, but I'm wondering if I would get the full experience if I created a character who didn't make the more subtle decisions from the first game. How many of the decisions are considered major enough to be included in character creation?

You don't need to play the prequel, however, in the short time I've been playing this game I can tell you it makes the experience so much better [Disclaimer: I did not Pirate, Canada Post gave me my copy early for some awesome reason]

From what I understand, a lot of the plot points in ME2 won't have the same impact if you didn't play ME1 all the way through... so I think that's a "you have to".

I had gotten about 5 hours into ME1 before I gave ME2 it's first spin, and while I had a running knowledge of the storyline, I feel like there's a lot I didn't know. So there's a large part of me that wants to shelf the second game until I get through the first, with the incentive that I already know the 2nd game is pretty engaging in it's own right.

Exactly. It was made to be a pick up and play, with the story getting filled up until then, but the first one was awesome too, so I recommend playing it.

You should.

...Which reminds me that I shouldn't have deleted ME few days ago when my disk started to malfunction... damn it.
