So the debate continues to rage on. Should Australia break all remaining ties to Britain? Is it time for us to change our flag to something new? Having said that should we also change our national anthem while we're at it? I personally think that we should become a republic and change the flag. The anthem I'm not sure about though. Your thoughts escapists?

One response to this: if it isn't broken don't fix it. There is nothing wrong with our anthem or flag, there is no point changing them, I don't see why people think we need to change, the only possible explanation is that they have a huge inferiority complex when it comes to the Brits, which in itself is stupid also.

I have spent a fair amount of time in Australia.

I don't think either need changing. The flag is very pretty and the fact it acknowledges the United Kingdom is not a bad thing at all. Also, the Australian National Anthem is one of the only ones I know that doesn't talk about God, killing, war, patriotism and false delusions of honor. Instead it talks about the goodness of the human spirit and is a very beautiful song.

I wouldn't object to either changing. It would be interesting seeing how insecure it would make people feel by changing their beloved symbols. All the bogans would no doubt rage, especially the ones with patriotic tattoos, and you'd see a lot of bumper stickers in protest.

They may as well incorporate the indigenous flag with it if they want, they lived here first and all. I kind of like the way the union jack looks, but it's a symbol of imperialism. I don't know whether Australia should become a republic. I don't have enough knowledge to judge at this stage. I don't feel very strongly about this issue.

I think we should become a republic and the anthem is fairly dull, though i dont mind the flag but if it were to change it wouldnt bother me (aslong as its replaced with a good one).

Really not seeing that here. Why do you have an inferiority complex about us Brits? So you lost the Ashes, I think you are still ahead in the long run and do farely well at the Olympics and other sports. You also have a decent standard of living and better weather compared to us (although not just right now I suppose).

OT: If you change the flag, you are breaking ties with the Queen and the Commonwealth (not officially of course, but I bet it will be seen that way). I thought you liked the Queen over there?
I don't know your anthem. That's awfully ignorant I know, sorry. It also means that I can't comment.

Just as long as we create a new flag, a grand one, majestic. The two the country displays, both the Aboriginal one and the One that our British folks inspired us to make need a redoing. Both look pretty pathetic IMO.

The Anthem should be changed to be something like the Soviet Unions Anthem, that was catchy, cool and authoritative.

Are you watching Good News Week? :D
I've been in this debate a couple of times, and the way I see it, if we did change the flag there would be a huge group of people petitioning to change it back, and a whole new argument would start. There would be no way to pick a new flag that everyone would be happy with.

As for the anthem, I don't really care but I don't fancy learning a new one so keep that the same too.

I'm fine with both the flag and anthem, however if Australia ever becomes a Republic we may need to change the flag. Otherwise I have no problems at all.

Lets be honest here, what exactly does Australia have to be authoritative about?

My point exactly I am arguing that we SHOULDN'T change and I can't understand any reason to change. We are a great country and unless our anthem or flag are broken there is no need to fix them.

Also on a side note,if we incorporated the aboriginal flag into our Australian one they'd all just ***** that they don't have their own flag any more.

Don't think we should break ties with the Commonwealth or the Queen just yet. Change for the sake of change just seems stupid to me, and neither our flag or anthem really need a makeover just yet.

the britis monarchy is rather redundant in our political format, so we might as well dump it completely. go the republic.

and get the union jack off the flag, its unnessesary. and people should realy stop wearin itas a cape to the cricket (or riots) it looks stupid.

don mind the anthem though

I personally think that Australia should disconnect itself from England. On the other hand I think that the aboriginal people should be given governing control of all the land.

Well...it might annoy some of the 99.5% (something like that) of Australians without aboriginal heritage as well.

Unless we get all the nations of the world together and make an awesome patchwork quilt or something.

If they were to change the flag, I'd go for something simple like a yellow kangaroo on green background...the kangaroo is on teh coat of arms, been on all RAN ships since Korea to distinguish them from RN ones, was used to identify captured Italian tanks at Tobruk etc.

also they are a very very lean source of protein and make fantastic steaks.
Not to mention your flag also sounds vaguely familiar it just needs some sort of gloves and shorts... sport related perhaps.

Personally, I find our anthem so boring that it's impossable for me to be inspiried or even mildly interested whenever it's played. Compared to some of the more powerful and emotive anthems from around the world, like say the French or the South African, or even the American anthem, ours just seems dull and doesn't say all that much about our nation or national identity.

Still, it's better then "God save New Zealand". God won't defend New Zealand in a war, we will. v.v

I have little problem with the flag, except that I'd suggest incorporating something Aboriginal along with the Union Jack of Britain onto it. To better represent our history. Maybe not the Aboriginal Flag itself, but something.

Edit: On top of all that, I find many of the lyrics insultingly wrong.

I second this. Changing our flag and anthem will achieve nothing and is completely unnecessary.
