Simply put, is it possible for me to get banned from Steam games, Tribes: Ascend, or other PC multiplayer games with security systems simply from using something like Youtube or WMP? I'm relatively new to PC gaming (been doing it for only about 4 months now) and don't know what can / can't set these systems off. I also sometimes feel like playing music in the background but don't do it because I don't feel like risking getting banned.

You mean, are you allowed to play any kind of music while playing in a VAC (or whatever) secured game/server? I see no reason why you wouldn't be allowed to do it. VAC should be smart enough to distinguish reading MP3s off the hard disk (or whatever) from messing with the execution of a game. It's not like it's easy to mistake the two things. It sounds like asking whether you can go for a walk in the park without the police suspecting you for car-jacking.

Yes I heard stories man... they will hunt you down like a dog should you use any other media at the same time.

No but seriously, you only get scolded if you use programs that mess with the memory space of the game it is protecting, aim-bots, scripts, leet hacks,...

you can have any programs running while using vac servers just make sure non of those programs interfere with the root files and other steam files. I played css for around 5 years straight, tabbing out to look at youtube and other sites and had music playing.

For instance competitive leagues have their own anti cheat software that runs while your playing css so its perfectly safe to browse and use any media software you can even record the screen for making videos.
