Are critics a plague? They hold great power of those in their specialty and, even though most will deny it to their dying breath, they often affect the industries total sales numbers. They get paid well, do little but sample foods, watch movies and television, and play video games for a living and write what they thought about it. If they write a positive review then that particular product will flourish, but if they write a bad one total sales will drop. Most will fall back on the age old excuse "do you really need us to give good opinions for you to purchase a product, we write an opinionated review and give gerneralizations" or something like that. There are people who purchase items based purley on reviews and if you can tell me that a movie or game review has not slightly tweaked you opinion on an object then you lieing because we humans have a instinct to go with the flow. Are critics nescisarry does there need to be people who critisize others work while not being able to do better themselves. On the flip side a review can give you a general idea about what a product is or does, and will keep some people from taking advantage of others. What are your thoughts?

No critics pull out flaws in works, so that they can be fixed or repaired for an even better product.

BUT!!!!
A corrupted and flawed critic is as useful and shooting your self in the foot

The fact that there can be giant gulfs between critical and popular opinions leads me to believe that ultimately, the question doesn't matter that much.

However, I don't want to call you an idiot, so I'm not voting.

your right but it doesnt make that current product any better, and isnt a view on a product all personal opinion anyway?

The only irony in this thread is that the OP is so obviously incapable of anything approaching accurate self-criticism that it is pathetic. Critics does not have an apostrophe! Critics don't hold power "of" their specialty, they hold power "over" or "in" their specialty. I could go on, but why?

As long as defectives who don't give a damn exist, critics will be vital to the continuation of the species.

very nice of you to point out all my posts flaws, and completely ignore the question, and what do you mean defectives?

The problem with professional critics, methinks, is that they just go through so many examples of whatever type of product they're reviewing that they might lose the ability to just enjoy the experience. In other words, with time every professional critic would just become either a reviewing machine capable of listing all the objective pluses/minuses of the product with no mention of its substance, or an annoying nitpicker who will actually try the same product multiple times just so that they can spot minor flaws better and latch onto them.

However, I still think they are necessary, but you should never rely on a small pool of critics. Each of them will point out something different, and all of their reviews taken together will allow you to answer this critical yes/no question.

I only restrict that to professional critics though, since what jadedgamer said is true of the general populace.

Some critics are good, some are bad, some are stupid, and some are funny.

Sorry, my only vote option is to call you an idiot.

Hmm . . . apparently an inability to read as well as write and spell is among your flaws, because I answered the question. Criticism, and thus critics, are utterly necessary. A system with no negative feedback quickly destroys itself.

Defectives . . . people who can't do things correctly. Whether they are unfortunates or just can't be arsed is another question. The former is sad, the latter is stupid.

Read the fucking dictionary thats what a critic is someone who tells there personal opinion just hand your buddy a fiver the next time you ask him something if its that fucking important to you...gah.
Yes but a buddy only says his opinion to a few friends a critics opinion can be heard, or read across nations. Also is that language really nescisarry I dont recall insulting your family, or smacking you across the face the entire purpose is to see how many people feel like me or not.

I like critics. I would like to be a critic, and not just because I'm a soulless bastard hell bent on destroying a masterpiece someone worked fifty years on because I had a bad day, but because I genuinely enjoy everything that comes with the job. Writing, reading or watching or playing, analyzing, and concluding. I personally think I'm very good at critic...ing.

YES I KNOW THE WORD IS CRITICIZING!

You could always... I dunno... not listen to critics?

People either decide to listen to critics and reviewers or not... it all comes down to personal choice. You can't blame critics if people choose to listen to the opinions of critics and act accordingly.

If you want to blame anyone... blame people who don't think for themselves.

you do know that arguing with meh ovah teh internet tis pointless rite thar is no nid for such words cus u mis deh poynt of dis tread in da fist plays. You hold some merit, and I can understand you viewpoint so please explain why a world without negative feedback would destroy itself. I think I know, but as you seem more learned than I, you would know better. Also there are plenty of threads with worse grammar than this one, but arent forum threads supposed to be all about people sharing their views and ideals. I know this isnt a perfect world, but treating everyone like their little children is not the best way to handle things.

keep in mind that before yahtzee did this professionally, he did it for free.

and while he's very funny and entertaining, would he be as successful as a critic if his critiques were a simple 'this game sucks' or 'this games great'?

believe it or not the movie Ratatouille not Yahtzee was the reason I thought of this thread.
