Over the last 2 or 3 days, Nintendo seems to have been receiving A LOT of hate from the public and the media, stating that they are still aiming towards the casual market, and some even claiming this was their WORST E3 ever. However, although they didn't have the spectacular first party line-up that everyone expected, the Wii U will not be anywhere near as bad as everyone is saying.

The Wii U itself, and the concept behind it, is pretty damn amazing in my opinion. Nintendo realised that developers aren't ready for a revolution, so they've created an evolution. Adding a second screen to the controller, along with all of it's other features, creating an incredible and diverse piece of kit for developers to work with. Support for the Wii's controllers and accessories make the Wii U both a brand new home console, and the Wii HD that everybody wanted.

Anyway, now on to software. We didn't get F-Zero or Starfox like everybody wanted. But Retro Studios are still working on a game, which could be either of those two, or a new IP! Only time will tell for that game, either way Pikmin 3 still looks to be very good, and the more I see of NintendoLand, the better it looks. It can online functionality, great graphics and could be a great introduction for casual players, and it has Nintendo characters in it, making it slightly more appealing for the hardcore market.

Anyway, the third-party support is pretty damn good, especially in comparison to the Wii. The only problem is, Nintendo didn't show off much of the best third-party support in the conference, causing all this negativity surrounding the Wii U!

Check out this video for the current software lineup: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2012-wii-u/731639

A lot of GREAT third-party games are coming to the Wii U, most of the games probably coming at launch. Ubisoft have some amazing support for the console, such as bring the incredible Rayman Legends as an exclusive, and Team Ninja and Nintendo are working together to bring a much improved version of Ninja Gaiden 3 to the console (Which seems to be receiving a lot of hate).

All in all, I believe the aim of the E3 conference was to show how diverse and varied the launch of the Wii U will be, and how it will aim at all audiences, and after seeing E3 I think the Wii U will be very successful, something I wasn't sure of beforehand.

Either way, the Wii U isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be, but I would like to hear your opinions!? What do you guys think of the Wii U? Will you get one?

I have gotten amazing mileage out of my wii. At first I thought this was going to be weird with the controller but the fact that a traditional one exists tells me that the screen will be totally optional for most games. I love the fact that Nintendo seems to be able to make great games accessible to everyone while also making games that most hardcore gamers like and games most casual gamers like. I bet they make the Nintendo Land a boxed bundle though, why? So they can create brand loyalty in the littler kids. I think this is going to be great because not only does it look good as a console but it feels unique, you aren't playing a videogame you're playing Nintendo. It's a feeling I've missed for a while.

Also Pikmin 3 looks amazing, hope they touch up the ground textures though, too flat right now but it's not like it isn't a work in progress.

Oh you card, you. Nintendo dropping new IP is about as likely as Half Life 3 being released next month.

and it has Nintendo characters in it, making it slightly more appealing for the hardcore market.
Did you mean Nintendo fans? Because if you meant serious gamers then most of them stopped taking Nintendo seriously around about the time they were re-releasing Super Mario Bros. for the eighth or ninth time.

OT: I predict that the Wii U will either succeed modestly or be the straw the broke the camel's back as the lifers see through all the bells and the whistles and the casual gamers just find it all too confusing.

After the Wii turned out to be a complete waste of time, I will be giving this one a miss for certain; at least until I see reviews from sources I trust saying 'no guys, really, it's not just another novelty box for people with five-second attention spans.'

Haha! Honestly I see where you're coming from, I really do.

It's true that Nintendo probably won't make a new IP, but I can always hope ;)

Either way, yes I suppose I do mean Nintendo fans, those than Nintendo lost with the Wii, and are wanting to gain back.

On your last point, I think that the Wii U caters for both those casuals gamers you were referring to, and the hardcore gamers that missed the Wii for the same reason you did. I think they're trying to get the best of both, and at the moment they are doing a decent job.

Yes, but not at launch.

All I need is a new Super Smash Bros., and that's already been announced, so I'm sold.

Well, I'm not going to knock your optimism, and I'm definitely not going to say the Wii U will suck/fail before I even get a chance to try it (because I hate people that do that) but I'll be approaching the whole thing with a heavy dose of guarded skepticism.

It really would be nice if everything happened as you predicted, but I'm going to need to see big departures from the kind of stuff we were getting on the Wii before Nintendo can win me back to their flock.

I don't really care what happens with the Wii U, so long as the other consoles don't bend over backwards trying to pointlessly imitate their gimmicks. These gimmicks (along with inferior hardware) are the reasons I can't use Nintendo's platforms anymore, because they simply render many games unplayable. To sony and microsoft: if you want to release extra's for your platforms later, then fine, but just remember the reasons we buy your consoles have nothing to do with how many times you can say "innovative" in your press conference. It's because you usually have the most stable platforms on which we can play the best games. End Rant.

Depends on the games. Like any console/handheld, it needs twelve games I want (and that I don't already own for a different system) before I'll buy it.

It looks like they are trying to give it a good launch lineup, though. That should be standard. I have no clue why so many people bought the 3DS or Vita at launch. What good is a game system without games? And don't you want to see if it is going to get good third party support before you buy it?

I totally will be getting a Wii U. I'm a Nintendo boy at heart, and even though I know that only Nintendo will get the most out of the "asynchronous gameplay" concept, I'm super excited just to have a box that could potentially play my old Wii games in upscaled HD. I own some of the most gorgeous games on the Wii, and I hope that the Wii U can finally show the true potential of their art directions.

Also the promise of playing games on my controller really is a seller. I live with my girlfriend and she loves many of the same games I do, which creates a problem when I want to experience them for myself. Being able to take the Wii U to the other end of the living room, throw headphones on and play my own Zelda game while she uses the TV is amazing, to say the least.

I am worried, though, about third parties. Most of what they showed at the conference were ports of recently beaten, still fresh games. I wanted to hear about Watch_Dogs, Far Cry 3, or others making their way to the console...Still, it's a start towards a more balanced image for Nintendo, and there are enough games I truly want to guarantee my eventual investment.

No.

There's nothing that the WiiU has that I can't get on PC/other consoles and I hate Mario so yeah.

The only game that is even remotely interesting is the zombie game but even then why don't I just play L4D or DayZ?

Absolutely not getting a WiiU. The poor line up of games consisting mainly of stuff I stopped caring about either after I played it on my 360 or years ago after I played it on a previous Nintendo system. The controller is, once again, a borderline gimmick that will limit game selection. And, perhaps most importantly when looking to the future of the investment, when the next generation starts for real in a year or so, it's once again going to be the underpowered sibling in the technology race.

I only need consoles to play games my PC can't, and I REALLY want more Pikmin, so yeah I'll get one at some point.
