I know this is a moronic thread (there seem to be a fair few around at the moment) and the vast majority will make unfunny one-liners or sarcastic references, but I'm actually taking this seriously because I see this question crop up on an array of different forums and it's mind-boggling how many people actually claim to support the idea...
No. They are there just for fun. That would be a terrible marketing decision from Microsoft. I mean, it would be good for us, but since when has Microsoft cared what's good for us?
They were at one time planning to give rewards for certain achievables but it was soon abandoned. Closest there is to such a thing is clothing for your avatar.
I say no. They are just fine the way they are now, as extra incentives to keep playing the games. They probably wouldn't give too many MS Points anyway. It would end up being something crazy like 10,000 Gamerscore = 100 MS Points so people don't rob Microsoft blind (not that they really need to worry about that).
Plus, when this question crops up, I also have to think of the same thing happening with Sony and the trophies, and it makes even less sense there.

It's bad enough that they make armour unlocks in halo 3 with the achievments. No points stay on paying basis otherwise the annoying hardcore gamers with nothing but cash to spend on games and cash they earned in games would drown the few who like the game for what it is.
This is what they were originally meant for. Even if it's like 1000 gamerpoints for 80 MS points, they should offer some sort of reward, however tiny. Hell, even 5,000 points for 80 MS points would be fine.
