Don't think I've seen this around here before.

Question is, should 18 rated games have the option to remove mature content in the options menu? This would effectively give the user the option to switch between different ratings in a game, to let younger people play,

If that was included then you would get younger people buying the game and setting it to an 18 after though >.> so it could work...but only if you could protect it somehow >.>

I forget to mention that only over 18's would be able to buy them still, as the content exists.

But that would remove the fun bits. Like blood 'n' guts and sexytime.
This is true.

Don't really fancy handing my niece Fallout 3 though.

Ah then yes it would work since they could monitor it if they gave it to a younger sibling to play :)

no, because then there is no guarantee that younger users will turn down the gore, swearing, etc. also I know some games which have the option to turn off the blood, gore, etc.

in theory it would work but in reality this would fail as no matter what people will put it as the 18+ always

You'd pretty much be making two games in one, since many games are built around the whole blood and guts and other lovely features.

They've tried this before, it didn't catch on. I remember Turok and Turok 2 on N64 had the option to turn off blood. I think the issue was that they realized that nobody was actually using the feature, so they stopped including it.

You honestly believe a 12 year old would turn it off?

No, I believe their parents would, then set a password.

My parents don't even know how to turn on the effin' box, it would be crazy to expect them to activate a password In-game. Not all parents are tech-friendly :/

yes, if its an option then it can't hurt to add it. Besides, you may have children in the house who you don't want to expose extreme violence to. It makes perfect sense to do so!

Gears of War 2 pulls it off perfectly by removing the swear words and replacing all the blood spray with sparks. It's a little cheesy but it does the job.

I dont think this would be a good idea. It would make devolopment longer and much more expensive and would probably not work as kids would just turn the violence and stuff back on

with something like Mortal Kombat, there'd be no point, it's still people beating the living s**t out of each other but with something like a scene where someone gets shot, i suppose they could hint that he has been shot, but not actually show it.

It would take too much time, energy, and money from development studios to do this.

Plus, most of the mature content comes from the actions you do in the game. If the point of the game is to kill a bunch of people, there's no way you can change that to be child friendly.

Well, a lot of games do that already, even such gory games like gears of war ... just look at the settings ;)

And no,it wouldn't really expand the development time,
1.deactivated gore/language options doesn't need new content,in fact you just lock content
2.they have to do that for the german versions anyway
