Whats the article in the newspaper have to do with this?
It was an article in my local newspaper about underage children playing 18+ games like GTA, and they asked the public wether they trust children with games by age or maturity.

Mature kids are few to come by. So, I'm going with the keep them the fuck out ruling.

Maturity.
I was playing Turok, no censors, by age 2. And it was (Even at that age) because I was mature enough to handle it.
And I turned out fine... *Twitch*

Plus there are many adults with the minds of children. So, yeah. Maturity.

Edit: If we're talking about online, my answer stays the same.
Mature children are a great find. They restore my faith in humanity, if not for more than a little.

I don't care how old they are, so long as they shut the fuck up.

Ideally, maturity, but how is the government supposed to police all the kids who shouldn't be playing these games? The purpose of age ratings isn't to target all of the kids under that age limit, but to reduce the chances that a person who isn't ready for this kind of thing getting hold of the game. Thats how it works in theory anyway. So, if we're going to have age ratings at all, they'll have to be based on age and not maturity. At least until the evil overlords take over and make us all wear mind probes so they can tell how mature we are and sell games according to that measure. (as well as banning their political opponents from watching PG rated shows for the evulz.)

Speaking frankly, I've never seen or heard of a case where a kid has been mortally scarred by a video game anyway. A few cases of misapplied nighmare fuel, but nothing life-warping. Well, except for that kid who shot his parents over halo, but come on, are you going to base your view of the entire gaming community on the actions of one (rather far on in his childhood) nutjob?

Films and TV are far more scarring at times in terms of high octane nightmare fuel and other mind-warping stuff, and just about anyone can access any TV show, regardless of age. Video games are fairly innocent compared to some of the mind screws and blood baths I've seen in the horror genres freely available on your TV set!

But I'm being overcritical. Like I said, you're never going to get a perfect solution. At the moment, we have the age system, not because it is the complete solution to the problem, but because it is the best thing our system can come up with. If you have any means of improving this, please email your local MP and tell him, he'd be thrilled for the chance to advance his career.

I'd say maturity, optimally, but at the moment the only power the law can practically put in place is banning by age.

EDIT: Again, until the maturity probe mark II comes out.

Mature gamers are hard to come by, so obviously they shouldn't be allowed to play on-line games either.

Maturity and age are synonymous. The question doesn't make sense.

I don't think young children should be allowed to use mics in online games, but I have no problem with them playing them.

What?!?
No they aren't.

Some university students go partying every night, some study every night.
The former are immature, the latter mature, yet they are all exactly the same age.

I would say maturity. Technically, I'm underage, but I think the age system is a little too flawed. I'm 15, but I've been playing 17+ games since I was 12, it hasn't caused problems, but this is likely because of my maturity. Or maybe just intelligence(common sense). Any smart kids knows what's in games should never happen in life, if they don't, their parents should teach them a few things, and maybe not let them play games outside their age-rating.

(side note: grammar fail on my part)

I'd say the mostly go hand in hand, sure you might find a mature 13 year old or a childish 30 year old but there usually the exception rather then the norm.

Younger players can stick around all they want, but I probably won't stick around for long.

The reason we have age restrictions is to make sure a kid is mature enough before they can do something. If they're mature enough, the age restriction is completely and utterly pointless.

Besides, I can tell you from experience that kids 10 and somewhat younger who can handle (American) M-rated games are not a small minority. Quite the contrary, they made up the vast majority of kids in 3rd grade or higher.

This

While it's up to the parents to enforce the maturity side, noobish children should be banned from Live by their parents while the mature kids are allowed.

On a personal level, I'd be inclined to judge each case by maturity. The problem with bringing that mindset into the ratings debate, though, is that there's no way to ensure that M-rated games are only getting into the hands of those mature enough to play them.

I think it's better to keep minors restricted from purchasing M-rated games. This way, it's up to the parents to decide if a younger gamer is, indeed, mature enough to play more violent games, which really is the way it should be.

And don't give me that "parents buy M-rated games for minors, then blame companies over the content anyway" argument. You hear about irresponsible parents blaming video games almost every day, but when was the last time those accusations actually amounted to anything other than just noise?
