http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_moia-oVI <--- YES THIS IS RICK ASTLEY'S SONG!

This thing on the internet, get someone to watch Ricks Never Gonna Give you Up and then laugh at them. Ive wondered where this started and why people find this funny. Personally I like the song; mind you the video is very corny.

Is it the fact that the video its self is so corny that makes the Rick Roll so funny to some? Or is it the fact that you tricked someone and made them watch something that you wouldnt want to?

Humans are weird in this perspective, I dont really see the humour in this, but then again, I dont see the humour in a lot of things, Ive seen people flip out because they have been rick rolled and I have seen people cynically laugh at someone because of being rick rolled.
I see this as childish really, but really what can I say, its the Internet.

What do you think?

I think it started on [sup]4chan[/sup] according to Wikipedia.

I can't comment on anything else as I have only been rick rolled once and that was when I first came here.

ugh, I hate that song... I vaguely remember seeing a detailed discription of the origin of the use of the song as a major annoyance somewhere on the wide, wide interweb... Still, I think it became popular cause people just like being pricks and getting horrid songs stuck in people's heads. Oh god, just thinking about it reminds me of that drum roll intro...

I enjoy the song. Hell, most of his songs are good. I'm actually going as him for Halloween. The outfit with the beige trenchcoat to be particular.

I believe it started in the deep, dark place we do not mention here, because They found his amateurishness funny. So They wanted to spread the word.
At least, so I have heard.
Additionally, I have stopped doing it, I think it is a tired and worn-out meme that just needs to die. <-My $0.02

Rick rolling can be funny if done correctly. One group decided to fake that they were going to sing Smooth Criminal and instead rickroll'd the whole school. It's time like that when it's funny, but no on a small scale.

Yeah, you trick them and the video is so intentionally comic in itself, so it was doubly funny.

It came from the final boss of the internet but found mainstream success because you can do it to anybody without offending anyone.

actually it started with a Family Guy episode, when Peter and Brian go back in time to 1984 and Brian says "and here's a song by a gay guy" and plays Never Gonna Give You Up and then 4chan did it after that

other than that it can be kinda funny but it can be rather annoying, depends on the execution

Personally, people that actually get angry at getting RickRoll'd is retarded. Mostly because they're like this:

NEW HALO 4 CONFIRMED!

*stupid fanboi clicks link, and goes berserk and starts punching holes in the walls at the first sight of Rick Astley*

SOPRANOS ENDING EXPLAINED! REAL DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY!

JESUS ON EARTH! FROM JERUSELUM!

And so on..

-.-

They're so easy to tell if they're a RickRoll, jeez.

Interestingly, Rick Astley when straight into the record books as most watched artist on the internet ever as a result of 'rick rolling'. Yup, bigger than Eminem, Metallica, Madonna, The Beatles etc.

I remember seeing an interview with the great ginger one, once this had been announced. He was asked if this could be the start of a comeback...No..Just No!

He technically is also the biggest loser from internet piracy. If his songs were played in a jukebox as many times as it was played (even in part) he'd be a very rich man.

That's utter bull. It started as a Duck Roll (wherein people would post a bait-and-switch link to a picture of a duck on wheels), and then somebody was explaining the DuckRoll on 4chan to somebody and linked them to the RickRoll. That's how it started.

Family Guy episode came WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY after.

This [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0&feature=related] website explains how rick roll started and why people still use it.

I doubt anyone will actually fall for that.
